Stock Trades on the Go
What's the best mobile gadget for downloading stock data and making trades? Start by looking for legible screens and speedy service

Reader Robert Pezick asks: I want to view stock graphs via the Internet (Yahoo! Finance and a few others) and trade stocks via a mobile device. Can you recommend the most efficient and best device to do this?

A:
Your best bet would be a Pocket PC Phone Edition. These are available under a variety of names from wireless carriers but basically come in two flavors, with and without built-in keyboards. Prices run between $500 and $600 with a service contract.

The strongest attraction of the Pocket PC for your purposes is the combination of relatively big displays (for handhelds) and the Internet Explorer Web browser, which does a decent job of displaying charts from Yahoo! Finance (YHOO ). The charts will be small but legible, though some fine detail may be difficult to make out.

EYESORE.  If you're going to be doing a lot of chart reading, download speed becomes critical. If Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service is available in your area, I would recommend the new Samsung SCH-i730 ($600). It's the first Pocket PC that can take advantage of the Verizon high-speed network and it includes a built-in keyboard.

Palm's (PALM ) Treo 650 is much less satisfactory at browsing complex Web pages and is particularly bad at displaying stock charts. No matter how I fiddled with the settings, I just couldn't make the charts readable on the Treo's relatively small screen.
