Apple is launching two new iPhone ads on TV tonight. The ads are intended to tout the iPhone’s ability to hold a simultaneous voice and data connection at the same time, something you notably can’t do at least as far as I know on other phones running on other networks.
One ad shows a set of work-related scenarios looking at an email from the boss a client while you’re still talking to him and a social scenario as well sending your friend directions to the movie theater while you’re still talking.
The ads can’t help but be viewed against the backdrop of the fight between Verizon Wireless and Apple’s partner AT&T, the one that’s spawned a lawsuit for Verizon’s “There’s A Map For That” TV spots. Here we see Apple doing its part as both a good AT&T partner, and touting a great feature of the iPhone all at once.
The ads will appear tonight during “House” on Fox, “Dancing With The Stars” on ABC, “How I Met Your Mother” on CBS and several others including The Daily Show on Comedy Central and several of the late-night talk shows.
I’ve embedded the ads after the jump.
Here's the first, the work-related one.
And here's the second ad, this one about meeting a friend for a movie and sushi afterward.
+1 for apple... after -20 :)
Naaaa... Honestly i really like the iphone, just that i feel like a douche just holding it.
I Don't Think Verizon Was Saying The Iphone Was Bad I Think It Was Just Saying That Network It's On Is Bad
Thanks for embedding the videos, but they are in Flash I could not view them on my iPhone. Can you repost them in QuickTime?
niiiice one apple! :) Go iPhone!!!
LETS GO APPLE. THATS HOW U DO IT
It has begun!!!!!!!! Round 1 fight!!!!
I don't really have anything to say. I'm just another lonely male posting on a blog.
Perry Clease, I am pretty sure you can watch it on your Verizon phone, just make sure you do not have a phone call coming in.
False advertising, Realistically it should have no bars for service, and it would probably drop the call 5 times within that one phone call.
Also how about background applications? no?
These ads were FAIL. Seriously Apple/AT&T hire the ad agency who did Verizon's commercials. Yours are as bad as AT&T's network.
Wait, apple has a phone?
All 3G (HSDPA/UMTS) enabled phone on AT&T can do simultaneous voice and data. This is part of the protocol specifications. Apple did nothing special other than implement the protocols, just like any other vendor.
Weak... Apple doesn't compare when it comes to networks.
Great you guys have the iphone.
I have verizon and an ipod touch works just fine on wifi. so i can still call people without getting dropped calls... and im not paying 30 extra a month to access the internet.
So what! The droid does that too... FAIL in my book!
With T-mobile's mytouch i can
Att and apple are best. F*** verizon my uncle have the droid it suck he lives on city and the 3g coverage is slow n sucks
People are going to make this about Iphone vs Verizon. Its ATnT and its network vs verizon not iphone. I would rather have my iphone with verizon then atnt
good lord; is that all they could come up with?
The AT&T commercial was boring as hell; the Apple ads look like they worked with the same marketing company.
it boils down to 'our network has 5x more 3G coverage' vs 'you can talk and use data on our network'...
I cannot remember the last time I took the phone away from my ear to look up a restaurant/movie/directions/etc- but I can definitely remember trying to pull up a web page when on EDGE!

Great Add. Great Phone & Great Network. I have At&T and never have a drop call. Just wanted to share. Truth be told :)
Niceeeee! I like apple and At&t. No problems whatsoever.
@Danny: No, the Droid doesn't do that. The Droid is Verizon-only (it's a Verizon trademark) and Verizon's CDMA-based network cannot do simultaneous voice and data.
@Doug: Wrt. background applications: The ad shows one running (the phone app is in the background while doing some data-based work in the foreground). Wrt. to dropping calls, I hear it's common but here (in central NJ) I don't suffer from it: I do the kinds of things illustrated in the ad all the time.
I've long thought that I'd like to switch to Verizon if the iPhone were available there (because of the call-quality reputation), but now I realize it's not an option exactly because of the limitation taunted by these ads.
@Doug
"Also how about background applications? no?"
Of course, the email application, the ipod, the MMS and SMS, Fring (it's a UNIX OS, but of course, that will very dificult to explain to some one like you), etc. Also, you can update application from the APP store while you are surfing the internet and making calls. Can you phone or your network do that?
Did you know? AT&T treats Voice and Sata the same way so data can overwhelm voice and is one reason for many **dropped** calls.
Verizon fans can talk all they want, but even with their Droid, they STILL have to hang up before they can do ANYTHING else on their phone. Some multi-tasking, ha!
These commercials were meant just to remind people of that; all the talk about multi-tasking Android (or Pre) phones, and they can't even do the most common of all multi-tasking combinations. Like talking and chewing gum!
I have the omnia on verizon and can surf the web, text, use office, whatever while i'm on the phone. Good one iphone, maybe i don't have 30,000 lightsaber and fart simulators but i can live with that.
yeah, you guys are wrong. only the at&t iphone can handle voice and data at the same time.
i have an iphone and iv never had a dropped call. i have dropped calls on my landline and previous verizon (an old lg) all the time. That said, i would still like to be on the verizon network.
This article is somewhat misleading.
Verizon launched a two-pronged ad war against AT&T & Apple. One called "iDon't" featuring the Droid and the other "There's a map for that..." featuring its network. AT&T responded, for better or for worse, with its ad. Apple is responding to the "iDon't" ad as well as referencing AT&T. "Does your phone and your network do that?" is not a defense solely of AT&T.
Wow. What data network is this phone on? Even on my home Wifi, the phone is never that fast.
It's more like "Hey man, can you get me direction?" and I need to leave the call, open safari (which reloads the page it was on automatically, hit stop, then enter the address, then wait, then find the part of the site that's applicable...then maybe get the info.
As long as AT&T continues to improve it's network coverage, as it has been doing, I would prefer to have an iPhone on AT&T's network as opposed to Verizons, BECAUSE it can simultaneously allow voice and data, where as Verizon's network cannot. It's a given that Verizon has a larger 3G network compared to AT&T now, but by this time next year, AT&T could have nearly the same 3G coverage as Verizon, with the simultaneous voice/data advantage being in AT&T's corner. iPhone Advantage: AT&T
"Can your phone and your network do that?"
Yes, I can do this same thing on my Blackberry with Sprint. A lot of other phones can do this as well
@ NeatOman
Go with your feelings on this one.
I can NEVER think of a time I need to talk and surf at the same time. Does Apple really understand what the average joe is wanting in a phone? I'd gladly give away my interweb ability on a phone for another network. Also, CDMA phones can do this too - on WiFi.
These commercials are so misleading by making you think it takes seconds to switch to the other app, search, load, and find the info for the person on the other line.
The iphone can't do it either when they can't find the at&t data coverage - there's a map for that.
I work for AT&T(wireless), and was a verizon customer for years, until i decided I wanted a iphone a couple months ago, AT&T's call quality sucks, dropped calls, text messages received hours later, callers on the other end not being about to hear you clearly, etc...... I hope for the day Verizon get access to the iphone so i can go back running . I'm happy with my iphone hands down, i just would like to be able to experience the same reliability that i had with verizon. Whats the point of having a cell phone with a provider and barely being able to use the voice feature of it?
First off apple makes so much bank on this phone they can care less cause verizon has nothing that can compete they just have fun with it. Apple is with at&T becuase verizons full of complainers and want there ugly logo on the iphone take a close look it doesn't say AT&T anywere. So whos smart.

@Perry Clease
THATS HILARIOUS
@Igor: You claim "Did you know? AT&T treats Voice and Sata the same way so data can overwhelm voice and is one reason for many **dropped** calls."
That's inaccurate: Voice is prioritized over data at a very low level.
@Scott M.: You don't need to leave the call to open Safari (and that's of course the whole point of the ad).
@Yellow One: You claim "I have the omnia on verizon and can surf the web, text, use office, whatever while i'm on the phone."
You may be able to do that by getting your data via WiFi, but not while the Verizon network is your only connectivity. EV-DV lost to EV-DO; it'll probably be until LTE before Verizon customers get to enjoy simultaneous voice and data over the Verizon network. (VOIP solutions may get there earlier, but Verizon is not likely to like that.)
yes my phone and network CAN do that. thanks.
Of course what tehy're doing here is opening themselves up to an attack about multitasking.
Filthy hypocrites they are.
WOW judges already made a preliminary decision and guess what it's on the side of Verizon! hooray
Actually after the hearing, AT&T made a a loser video, and they even used Luke Wilson to made the ridiculous video. One of the reason why this advertisement failed to give
impact on viewers coz it sounds too farfetched/ wrong timing and guess what? Copycat to the "there's an app for that ads"

Actually, the droid DOES do ALL of that...

nice!
Good one Apple and AT&T f-u Verizon I have yet to find anybody using Verizon !!! The commercials are better and its true I couldn't live without being on the phone and using the internet at the same time Can Verizon do that HELL TO DA F NO !!! LOL ATT U ROCK !!
sounds like a needy friend...doesn't he have a droid? ;)
Love the new AT&T commercial F-u VERIZON "Can your phone and network do that" lol good comeback AT&T !!!
DUDE DRIOD SUCKS !!! THERES NOT EVEN MUCH HYPE ABOUT THE DRIOD AND iPhone 3 years later still has all the attention on it !!
Ok, so the iPhone can be on a call and surf the web at the same time. Big deal. All smartphones on GSM networkd can do that. It's not a feature that the iphone has over someone else.
It get that they are fighting back against the attack of Verizon and the DROID, but call and data connections is the only thing they are going to win at.
What's really sad for the iphone is that the year old T-mobile G1 can do everything that the iphone does in that commercial, plus more. The iPhone can ONLY multi-task with a few specific apps, mainy ones that are built in, but nothing from the App Store.
Maybe T-Mobile will get the Motorola Milestone (GSM Version of the DROID) and then I wonder how At&t and Apple will respond considering T-Mobile will flip the HSDPA+ switch before 2010. At&t will no longer be able to say that they have the faster 3G network.
The real win will be the iPhone on Verizon or Sprint. That is when people will have a great device with a reliable network. I actually dropped the iPhone due to AT&T's crappy network. I just could not take all the dropped calls with clients. When the iPhone is available on Verizon or Sprint I will purchase it again.
People,
Verizon Network would crash if it had the iphone on it, even with their current network it just meets the demand. CDMA is old and slow that why Apple went with its current partner.

I use a Droid now and I just tried to surf the web while talking. It doesn't work. My calendar and contacts work just fine since they are already synced with the cloud. I never realized the limitation I guess because I don't wait until I'm talking to the person I'm going to see before starting a search for sushi while standing on a street corner. At my desk, I'll use my real computer. Driving in my car, I'm not going to surf and talk on the phone AND drive. At a friend's house, I'm usually on their WiFi network at that point, so my data goes through. I guess if I were standing on that street corner and we decided to have sushi and I had to find a place to eat right then, I'd hang up, find the sushi restaurant, and email a link to the restaurant to my friend so they have it in their phone and don't even need to write it down or call me back when they forget the street address. So, in conclusion, this ad doesn't do anything for me.
I don't get this at all. I can talk on the phone and surf or open any app on my Blackberry with Verizon.
I agree! iPhone is great, people complain about AT&T service, not "what u cannot do" on the iPhone, even on the Verizon ads, they are not saying iPhone is bad, but I guess Apple have to kiss AT&T's butt a bit.... once iPhone can do both GSM and CDMA problem will be solved.
I love my iPhone. I love AT&T, they were the one who brought the iPhone to us. Verizon sucks.
In Canada - much as we like to hate Rogers - you can do this and we've always had MMS.
We pay more but at least stuff works!!
Not taking sides. I use a non-3G, first gen iPhone and I have friends that use Verizon and T-Mobile.
#1 The Verizon ads are misleading because it seems that the iPhone is useless outside 3G. This is incorrect. It is slower but not so much to be a burden. Sure 3G and a good 3G is snappier but not required. My non-3G iphone gets the internet, download apps on the go, great email, txt, email downloads, visual voice mail, etc.
#2 At&t network quality is fine. I've travelled a lot and don't have dropped calls or this or that. Even when I have one or two bars, I still get the internet and the calls. It works wether people agree or not.
#3 My T-Mobile friends complain about coverage on T-Mobile but really like their plans. My Verizon friends have great coverage but complain about crappy phones. They long for an iPhone on Verizon.
#4 I think this started when Verizon asked for and was denied the iPhone, so they went ahead and started negative ads.

Or perhaps it is because At&t's growth of recent is bigger than Verizon, thank the iphone?
http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/10/26/att-mobility-is-nipping-at-verizons-heels/
People with other phones are happy with whatever phones people choose to have. Apple nor At&t never complained about that until Verizon started their attacks. Why does Verizon need to spew so much hatred towards Apple and At&t? If people really like their service and their phones they wouldn't need this kind of advertising. That's what drives Apple and apparently, this is also driving At&t's current success.
Much ado about nothing. AT&T is WEAK. Their signal is WEAK, their network is WEAK and their price plans....well, I'd better not say what I think about that.
I can only hope that all this nonsense doesn't stop the iPhone @ Verizon from becoming a reality ( sooner rather than later ). I will be in my local Verizon store 30 seconds after the iPhone is offered there. I only hope APPLE will be able to keep up with the demand!! DUMP AT&T ALREADY !!
Internationaly, carriers do the same thing as what they advertise in this ad, and I really think that Apple should offer it to all carriers in the USA as well as it has done in other countries like France, UK and Canada. However for that to happen and especially for Verizon to be able to have it, then it must do something to it's network for it to work with seemless calling and doing something else.
Hey MSL. The funny thing about your quote "#4 I think this started when Verizon asked for and was denied the iPhone, so they went ahead and started negative ads." is how false it is. Why open your mouth when you don't even know what you are talking about. Verizon wasn't denied iPhone. Verizon told apple to take their iPhone elsewhere because of how much percentage of profit they wanted from all the monthly re-ocurring charges. Verizon won't be bullied by a company like apple they way they made AT&T bend over backwards for them. They are much smarter and have a higher revenue because of it, allowing them to have a much more prominent 3G/Voice network. The commercials are not misleading, they are merely stating that Verizon has a much better, specifically 5x better, 3G network where it allows you to access your data services at a much more efficient speed. 3G means fast. That is all that means. And yes any phone that isn't running on 3G is practically useless because it takes 2 years to download a picture. Get your facts right before you start talking. Also, all of the above info stated is PUBLIC information so it is not misleading, false, inaccurate, etc. :) GO BIG RED!!! Don't hate on the best! Verizon is still the number one provider WITHOUT the iPhone. Once Verizon get's it, it will be a TKO, no contest.
i respect apple for doing something though, especially because feuds fuels sales. i just don't think they're doing it in a way that will help them look like they're saying they will later "conform" with V.
*shrug* lets see how this plays out, in the mean time ill watch the sparks fly
T-Mobile's G3 coverage allows me to talk and use data at the same time. My G1 Android phone works great and I enjoy it much more than an iPhone

Yeah, an article about the iPhone and the associated video is not viewable on that phone. Flash, it is a plague infecting the web.

MSL you must be easily confused by shiny objects because the ads do not talk about Edge coverage at all. Just because the maps do not show edge doesnt meen it isnt there.
everyone is talking about verizon network and how it's the best well i will say i do know alot of people that do have verizon and they don't like it . 1 is the fact they are too expensive. 2 is the phone choices. 3 is the fact if they ever wanted to leave it would be a 350 cancellation fee. i mean verizon i would have to say is good and bad like alot of companies but they kinda suck cause they jerk their customers all the time. i use to be on t-mobile but it sucks majorly so i friend had the wanted the iphone so she convince me to so i got the iphone and since then i never had data or drop call problem that i did have with t-mobile. calls are excellent. data is fast what more can i ask for . oh just that AT&T give me free month service once and a while for saying thanks for being a loyal and upstanding customer. i don't think alot companies do that. does verizon do that ?????? i live in nyc and i always have 5 bars. yes in certain places like basement or even some building i have few bars but so does my friends that have verizon so people that say that they have issue with At&t i would have to say maybe it's where your at and the cell towers that are near by who knows but in nyc im good :0
Look, Apple is leading the cell phone industry with the iPhone. No one company has done this, not the blackberry folks, nor the droid. AT&T has been around for a very long time, well before Verizon, and they provide the same service as any other provider. I've had Sprint, Verizon, and now AT&T and honestly AT&T has been the most reliable. For all the iPhone non-supporters, your comments are futile at best. People love to bash Apple, why? They make great products, have the finest customer service ever, and show user loyalty. Apple far exceeds, they're over achievers, they are innovators in a place where most companies are about quantity when they should be concerned about quality. Apple is king.
Good Job Apple! I happen to Love my Iphone and the ATT network.
Just tried it with my G1 (T-Mobile). Can chat and surf simultaneously with no trouble. Just sayin.
the iphone and AT&T can get on deeez nuts.Want to see a good commercial goto youtube type "the iphone commercial you will never see" that is truly the AT&T network
Hey Bill you are totally wrong Blackberry is leading the smart phone world with around 53% of the total Business so know what your talking about
You should all just shut up and deal with the fact that in the US - we get screwed by the cell providers. Considering Verizon's charges for data and voice vs Sprint, you VZ people should hope that both Sprint and VZ get the iPhone next. Otherwise, you will be suckered in to paying the astronomical plans that both ATT and VZ offer. I have had Sprint for 12 yrs and have never had problems. In fact, I have had perfect 3G coverage on my Treo for like 7 years. Now I have a Hero and I must say that once Android 2.0 comes out on my Hero, there is no comparison with a damn iPhone. Also, just so you know, I AM a PROUD Apple Geek. I just could never switch to ATT here in SF, as I frequently have to lend people my Sprint Hero because their iPhone will not work ! What the iPhone needs is competition and ASAP. How the hell they convinced federal regulators for a 5 yr deal, I will never figure out.
Actually RIM controls the smartphone market share...BOOM!
OK--a guy talking to a guy about going to a movie and then sushi afterwards is G-A-Y!!!
Hey name, try using some punctuation in your writing, people may have a tendency to take you seriously. As far as Blackberry, give it time, a very short time. iPhone has smothered the casual and business user Blackberry types. Don't believe all that you read, most of it is fluff generated by those insipid fools loosing the smartphone war to Apple. So, Name, know what you're talking about.
Let's Keep It Real, Verizon gained 14 million subscribers when it purchased Alltel to become the largest wireless company in the U.S.. AT&T has gained 1.1 million subscribers over Verizon in the last 2 quarters, so people are picking APPLE/AT&T over Whatever/Verizon! So Verizon had to come out with those ads because customers was leaving them. It's not about Droid(Da Microwave) vs Iphone, it's about trying to stop the damage. From what I'm hearing people at Verizon are not happy about the sales of the Droid, about 160,000 as of today 11/23/2009. Do the numbers, thats 3,200 phones per state do they have a map for that!!
LOL AT&T is stupid. Verizon inst saying the iPhone is bad just the AT&T 3G network. The question at the end "can your phone and your network do that?" wasnt though out very well, because Droid Does do that....
My network and my phone CAN do those things, and I do them regularly. Android anyone? With the new Verizon Droid, AT&T and Apple just released pointless ads... way to go.
Great ad, I use voice/data at the same time A LOT!
The only thing that would have made that commercial better is if he ended it by saying "suck it"
That is a huge advantage for AT&T in my opinion. I can't believe they don't highlight this point more often or even sooner than this.
iphone ability to hold a simultaneous voice and data connection at the same time?? iphone? it has been a while now, since the first blackberry years ago was able to do this, this is not an iphone original feature. Blackberries have it since a long time ago! apple should know that! Arik do you really are capable of writing about technology? i guess not. sorry.
All men arguing & commenting here. Too funny!
i do this all the time the only thing is that the speaker phone sucks and i can only hear people and they can only hear me if i'm right next to the phone in a sealed room at midnight and that is only if the call doesn't drop. otherwise it's great.
Kudos to apple defending themselves because AT&T did the crappiest job at that. BUT...iPhone's interpretation of simultaneous voice and data is over-exaggerated. This capability is only available when in a 3G area. Verizon boasts confidently and truthfully, it's robust 3G Network vs. AT&T's very limited coverage. Secondly, AT&T Voice has a lot of coverage but not a lot of reliability, so let's not think about adding data at the same time. Even in 3G coverage areas i found many times in my browsing i'd fall back into EDGE bc of AT&Ts underdeveloped network. Last, iPhone doesn't to often run apps as fast as the commercial did. I wouldn't dare try that while on a call. I carried the iPhone for 6 months and not once was simultaneous voice and data something i used, and i was aware of the capability. Most iPhone users are gonna look at this commercial and say i didn't even know i could do that, bc it's not a highly sought out functionality.
Hummm... I have a Blackberry Bold on AT&T and my chick has a Blackberry Tour on Verizon. She gets 5x more dropped calls then I do. And 85% of the time I have "more bars n more places". Speaking from experience Verizon sucks ass. NO DROPPED CALLS AND MORE BARS FOR ME!
Wow, voice and data at the same time? Wait...my G1 can do that just fine. So why does Apple think it needs to share that? Most smartphones can do that...
THE DROID DOES!!
@Bill you know that the AT&T your subscribing to today, and the AT&T you are referring to about being around so long are two different companies right? You say AT&T has been around longer then Verizon, but in all actuality, Verizon is more AT&T then AT&T is.
AT&T = Cingular. Verizon = NYNEX = Bell Atlantic = ....AT&T
I have the iphone, and its a really convinient feature! Im glad the commercial is boasting it, becuase i know alot ofpeople that are unaware of this! (BTW I have NEVER had a dropped call, and unfortunently verizon, your 3g is uber slow, no matter how much coverage you have)
*sent from calvin's iphone*
Android does this... big deal.. Iphone is still gay
I've always been able to do data and voice with my Winmo phone(AT&T Tilt flashed to Win Mob 6.5) I can even tether it to my computer, watch streaming video, and make a voice call at the same time. This is not a new feature. This is an old feature that other phones have always had. Once again, Apple is playing catch up. When apple finally allows mms on the iphone, appletards will probably think the iphone is the first in the world to be able to do this because some slick tv commercials tells them how awesome it is. The truth is that Apple intentionally hobbled the iphone by leaving out certain key features (flash, mms, tethering, etc.) so that they would have something new to offer with each successive version of the phone. There is no technical reason why the iphone should not have been able to do all of this stuff at release. I have been using windows mobile phones for years and have always been able to tether it to a lap top and do voice and data transfers at the same time. Wake up appletards! You are being taken advantage of.
And don't start a flame war on the crappiness of winmo. I know already. It is a seriously flawed piece of software that is not getting enough development resources from microsoft. But at least it can do all of this stuff that iphone can not. Give me a call when the iphone can run 2 applications at the same time. Until then, stfu.
The Iphone is a great piece of hardware.
AT&T is a terrible provider. for the last 6 months I have been dropping more and more calls, and my "GPS" has become completely unreliable.
AT&T has not been reinvesting profits into their company. Whoops. Apple should sue them for damage to their brand and open the gates to other providers.
The point is that AT&T has simultaneous voice and data--something I use all the time. Verizon can't do this! I have an iphone and love my iphone. And I don't have coverage problems. Went to check out Droid last weekend and spent 15-20 min playing with it. It doesn't even come close to the iPhone!
...All well driving.
Hey Andy...your Droid CAN'T do that buddy! AT&T has simultaneous voice and data, which was what Apple is saying in their new commercial. Verizon's 3G technology CAN'T do that! It's not possible! And that's huge to me!
If AT&T's coverage was as bad as so many say, they wouldn't have just put out a record 3rd Quarter--the greatest increase in activations they've ever had. They handily beat Verizon and keep gaining more customers than any other carrier. So I can only laugh at all the AT&T haters!

AT&T, Verizon, iPhone; bla bla bla. As many others have mentioned, this is nothing special @ all. T-mobile's network uses the same technology & obviously you get better results due to the fact that you'd be using an Android enabled handset. They can multitask. Oh & if anyone wants to take a shot at T-mobile's limited network coverage; go ahead. Just keep in mind that when you're on a call with T-mobile & the calls drops; it's b/c of AT&T's coverage; because of T-mobile's contract with AT&T & their cell towers.
This will all be moot in a year when Verizon starts rolling out LTE. As usual, AT&T will be a year or two behind.
Can you phone multi-task?... NO!!
As with all issues in life, there are many variables when talking about phones and wireless providers. Both my wife and I have iPhones and have found them to be very useful. I enjoy listening to music and being able to take a call while the music pauses, then starts back up after the call. It's a simple pleasure I'm sure other phones can do, I just like the Apple hardware and software combination. Where we live in South Florida, our coverage is good with AT&T. I traveled weekly to the Northeast and worked for Verizon Business, most if not all of their employees had Verizon Wireless. In that area, I heard a lot of complaints about the Verizon Wireless network, such as dropped calls. The other issue was not receiving notification of voice mails or the voice mail at all until sometimes two days later? Voice mail is a separate system that interfaces with the wireless network but I had never seen anything like that happen before and it happened often. I had hoped Verizon would get the iPhone, one because I thought they had good customer service and two I thought it might cause AT&T to lower their price for iPhone data plans. No wireless carrier will lower their price if they do not have to. They would all still charge 25 cents a minute if they thought they could get away with it. They are not any different from any other business trying to maximize their earnings. As for Verizon having more 3G coverage, I've worked for wireless carriers, you can spew signal anywhere, it's the capacity you have and how effectively you handle data that matters. What good is coverage if you don't have capacity? Is AT&T having to play catch up after offering the iPhone, yep. But they are and have been increasing their capacity by a mind boggling amount. Back in the 90's if you had three T1 lines going to a cell site you were jamming. I've seen as many as 24 T1 lines in sites now. It's the whole chicken or egg question. How do you build a network to handle customers without customers? Lots and lots of money up front and hope you can get the customers you need to pay for what you just built. Again, I know it's much more efficient now but I remember people complaining about paying $500+ for their Motorola brick phone and another $400 or more a month for the service. I brought a customer into a cell site once and showed him the single $5,000 radio his cell phone was connecting to. That didn't include everything else that made up the site. Technology cost, I'd like to pay less for my iPhone plan, but I enjoy the tool and I'm willing to pay, for now.
I think it is misleading to show that iphone uses only go to movies and eat sushi.
If anybody every tries to use the internet on their phone while I'm talking to them on that phone I promise I will hang up.
I have an iPhone 3GS, and love it. I have had no problems with it. Highly, highly recommend it.
I have a BB storm (9530) on verizon. I have been doing these things all along. Ooooopps was I not supposed to be able to do that???
Is amused by the irony of reading this article on my 3gs and not being able to see the ads because the phone
won't play Flash.
So yeah ... i have sprint (cdma, same as verizon), and a blackberry curve 8330.
I just opened an active data connection to the web, and while loading a page, i made a call to my office phone. Then, i loaded another page, and was able to receive a call while a data connection was open.
Why do people assume that no one can do this just because the iPhone can't?
this isn't new tech.
while i know that verizon has a habit of crippling their phones in a way others don't, the author did not relegate his statement strictly to verizon, but left it open and encompassing of all other non at&t carriers.
I think it's funny that the friend he calls is Ted Kapusta. Kapusta in Polish is cabbage or sauerkraut.
Really?
Its showing the same function over and over again of one thing that it does do differently! Ok so you have 1 thing over it!
and when was the last time I needed to do all thoses things while on a call? Never. At the most get a number for someone...but all other Phones already do that...
Hmmm on a call and someone needed a #, yes On a call and someone wanted a web link, yes On a conference call and texted someone that was on the call? yes Able to run apps in the back ground yes, just install backgrounder via cydia.
Look the droid is better hey cool you have apps soo does the droid not as many but its growing and the voice and data cool buuuut the droid can do it too when you're in a wifi hot spot soo nothing new iphone good try not strong enough
People, it's all about education. The ads can say what they want to say, but unless you know the truth it really doesn't matter.
Verizon may have a larger 3G network, but what the adds don't say speaks volumes. AT&T also has the EDGE, 2.5G, network. True it is not as fast as 3G, however for casual users there isn't a HUGE difference. Remember, smartphones are like computers. If you don't clean your cache and history, no matter how fast the network is, the device will be slow.
Also, remember, the millions of iPhone users along with the other millions of data users on the AT&T network put a strain that Verizon and Sprint cannot handle. If Verizon and Sprint were to really have a device similar could their network hold up? DO you honestly think it could? I doubt it.
Verizon grew by purchasing anothe carrier. So what. Grow on your own network and merits. That's true growth.
Verizon will never catch up to AT&T's abilities. Sprint, well it's just a matter of time. They are bleeding customers and money. I am not even going to get in that trap.
Have a great day!
Dont get me wrong. The iPhone is an awesome phone. It is the best thing since the Motorola Startac. Its just that AT&T's coverage really really really really sucks. All you people with AT&T like me know that the coverage sucks. Calls get dropped and 3G in many areas is slow as hell. Especially in the city. I work in the city and AT&T sucks here. How the hell can the greatest phone ever made have such crappy coverage in New York City? Seriously!!!
The first ad is lame. It doesn't actually show connecting to the network, just reading the email that's already been downloaded. What's special about that?
Poor AT&T, it must now have Apple defend it. lol.
@Keen
Who's smart?
Not you.
Multitasking on a SmartPhone causes memory problems for the end user, and they don't know why all their apps are screeching to a sloooow pace. That is not a consumer device if you have to be a geek to keep it running properly. Only Apple gets this.
This is a very good ad to show Verizon that AT&T is better. I like AT&T the best.
This is a very good ad to show Verizon that AT&T is better. I like AT&T the best.
Where are all these people having problems with their ATT coverage? I have never had a problem with Cingular or ATT and I've been using them for 10 years.
The iphone does what its suppose to do and does it well.
The only reason Verizon people are putting down the simultaneous voice and data feature is because they don't have it. You know dang well that if it was the other way around Verizon would be waving banners stating we can do voice and data together and you can't.
When will Verizon customers realize that ATT and iphone owners don't really care what they think. You open your mouth to say something and all we hear is blah blah blah.
I'm and iphone, fist bump me, do you have MAP for that? Sitting side by side in a Verizon zone my iphone STOMPED the Blackberry in every function. Ease of use, internet connection, voice dial, GPS mapping, sending text and email, web suffing.... P.S. The DROID YUCK! Unless you have little girly fingers using this phone is like pulling teeth. The Strom II is a much btter unit but still no comparrison to my iphone.
So fun to see the legions of apple/att fans flying the flag, charging the hill against the legion of droid/verizon fans with their swords drawn. No amount of over-capitalization, deriding other's punctuation and spelling, personal stories about how great your phone/network is, and how all your friends are jealous of your iphone/droid/Tilt2, will convince one side to join the other. God, this is amusing.

"AT&T has been around for a very long time, well before Verizon"
Um... ah... they've been around for the same amount of time. Verizon and SBC/Cingular were both born as spun-off Baby Bells when Ma Bell was broken up. Just because SBC bought the remnants of the mothership doesn't make them date from "well before Verizon".
Then again, you went off about how Apple is a bigger player in the smartphone world than BlackBerry, so it's not like I need to show any further research before I can call you an idiot.
People keep knocking AT&T and its network for dropped calls... i've had the service for over 5 years and i RARELY drop calls or have data issues... people need to realize that the iPhone is the COOLEST phone out but does not have the best antenna for reception... your call quality is going to depend on the device and AT&T's network is amazing with the right handset... seeing as the iPhone is for entertainment i'm sure if you relied on your calls THAT much you would buy a blackberry.
Great add, NeatOman if you feel uncomfortable holding the iPhone, get a Speck Pixel case. It gives you something to hold onto. Speck also has a case that looks like a piece of truck tire, very manly. Long live the iPhone, down with AT&T, iPhone's only drawback.
iphone is a great smartphone. It does have a few draw backs but for the most part it is great. Think abouot it everyone compares their new phone to the iphone. THAT MEANS IPHONE IS THE BIGGEST AND THE BADDEST OUT THERE. IF YOU ARE THE PHONE TO BEAT YOU MUST BE THE BEST. I HEAR DROID IS MAKING HEADWAY BUT HAS TO CATCH UP ON THE APPS. SO FOR NOW IPHONE REIGNS SUPREME. AND ALL YOU IPHONE WANNA BEES BOW DOWN!!
Okay guys, this close-mindedness is really annoying. Let's get some facts straight:
The combination iPhone hardware/AT&T network allow it to access the data and voice networks simultaneously. There are other phones on AT&T's network with that capability, but none that offer the same features as the iPhone (iTunes, iPod, app store, etc.)
The dropped call rate has been significantly lessened between the iPhone OG and the iPhone 3GS. Look up some statistics and actually USE AN IPHONE before you make assumptions.
AT&T's network offers the fastest 3G connection in the country and, despite people's perceptions, often has better coverage than Verizon within the areas where they share coverage. I certainly cannot get a decent signal in NYC with the blackberry Curve but the iPhone gets great service.
Oh, and by the way, Verizon turned down the initial offer for the iPhone back in 2005. Which is why AT&T is the official provider. Would you people be bashing it if it were on Verizon, even if it had great coverage? Don't go bashing Apple because of network issues. Oh, and you CANNOT MAKE COMPARISONS unless you OWN SIMILAR PHONES ON BOTH NETWORKS!!!
IPHONE IS THE PHONE TO BEAT.... IPHONE IS THE PHONE TO BEAT........IPHONE HAS NOT BEEN BEATEN YET......AGAIN BOW DOWN DROID, HERO, TOUCH PRO , ALL OTHER SMART PHONES BOW DOWN!!!!!!
AT&T = sux price and quality..
iphone = best phone there is!
verizon = wish had the iphone..
verizon people say they can do that with their wifi. I had a 2G phone that would run apps when on a call also. that was way back when I was still on firmware 1.1.4. For those T-Mobile people that don't get good coverage. You can choose your network also. I do traveling on the reservation. If on the auto setting I end up picking up crappy Cell One reception. Depending on my location there is limited Data service with that carrier. I found if I just manually set my network to AT&T I would get the data network to come up. Remember T-Mobile doesn't charge for us to roam on other people's networks. Jailbroken iphones are also fun.
and that also goes for you too blackberry, get your track ball fixed.....and do what? .......bow that -ss down!!!! WHO WILL BE THE NEXT CONTENDER TO THE IPHONE???? POSSIBLY THE HTC HD2 BUT THE WINDOWS OS IS ITS DRAWBACK BECAUSE THE APPLICATIONS ARE LACKING. LETS FACE IT, ITS HARD TO BEAT THE IPHONES OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS, THE SPEED AND EASY OF OPERATION, THE SLEEK DESIGN,THE APPLE QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. HTC HD2 IS GOING TO BE A GREAT BUSINESS PHONE AND WILL ATTEMPT TO DRAW THE CROWD WITH SOME ENTERTAINMENT BELLS AND WHISTLES. THE TRUTH IS IPHONE IS NOT A GREAT BUSINESS PHONE BUT A VERY GOOD ONE. BUT WHAT IPHONE DOES BETTER THAN ANYONE IS ENTERTAIN, IE.. MOVIES, MUSIC, GAMES, ETC. ITS THE VERY BEST ENTERTAINMENT PHONE BLENDED WITH A VERY STRONG BUSINESS PHONE. THATS WHAT HURTS ALL THE OTHER SMARTPHONES. THEY DONT DO IT ALL AS SMOOTHLY AND EFFORTLESSLY AS THE IPHONE. THINK ABOUT IT MAN ITS APPLE. THE SERVICE ISSUES WITH AT&T WILL BE RESOLVED AND THE COMBINATION OF DATA AND VOICE OPERATION WHICH IS NOT ALL THAT UNCOMMON, WILL BOLSTER THE IPHONE AND AT&T EVEN FURTHER AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION. PS BEWARE OTHER SMARTPHONES YOU ALL ARE DOING WHAT YOU CAN TO CATCH UP TO THE IPHONE AND BE LIKE THE IPHONE, JUST THINK WHAT THE NEXT IPHONE WILL BE LIKE. GUESS WHAT , YOU WILL HAVE TO PLAY CATCHUP ALL OVER AGAIN. I THINK THATS THE POINT AND CAUSE OF ALL THE HATRED TOWARDS THE IPHONE. APPLE'S IPHONE IS THE LEADER AND EVERYONE ELSE JUST FOLLOWS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW DID THEY DO THAT ? NOW LETS PUT THIS IN OUR PHONES. LETS SAY WE CAN DO THAT NOW. SOMETHING THATS BEEN DONE ALREADY BY IPHONE. SO BE CAREFUL ....YOU MAY FORCE APPLE TO PUSH THE IPHONE SOMEWHERE YOU CANT REACH.
Now, if someone can just convince Steve Lobs to take security seriously the iPhone and Apple might contend for business dollars where the real money is at. I remember my buddies law firm going to iPhone ver 1. 17% identity\bank theft. Round 2, hacked into their email system. Hackers are real Steve, and they are nasty, stop lying that Apple is secure is come to Jesus, I'd love to see them take some steps there to legitimize their security and have a more well rounded product.
You iTards better be careful. Apple was a dead company if Bill Gates hadn't lent them money to ensure he had a non-monopoly. iPhone is at risk of going the same route if Steve isn't careful. They need to be more open development. Google is open to it for a reason, they are an ad super conglomerate. Apple wants to own all the pieces. THey need to be smart or once again, like with computers, "own" the market and with greed drive them self into oblivion. Hopefully they learn this time and keep driving the market to create exciting new offerings. They really do need to multitask, I know iTards on here don't care, but they don't white collar work upper class style, but businesses live and die by it.
Come on ...4G is coming and trust me... You will choose Verizon to have data and voice in the same time. AT&T is one trick ponny and they will lose it very soon... Apple will be crazy not to work with Verizon
Sorry... Verizon & all other networks... ONLY AT&T can do this... really... that's why I love my iPhone on AT&T :D
In response to AlexB comment... NO way for Verizon, as it's a shot that they can't easily rebuff. Verizon's current network is based on the CDMA protocol, which restricts all of Verizon's phones to handling voice AND data separately. But AT&T's GSM-based network can handle voice and data at the SAME TIME, WITHOUT breaking a sweat.
still whant the fm radio before i get hook on the iphone..mark...
Love the second ad. My last name is Kapusta. I never thought I'd see it in a commercial.
That is a lie to be honest, I have a droid and i can do it on my droid and Verizon network, i just tried it right now, and if ur wondering go see a friend who has a droid and check out if it is possible, oh u can also play games while using the phone... . i wonder if now Verizon is going to sue at&t? because Luke Wilson just gave a commercial from at&t that specifically said Verizon and their phone cant access the web while talking on phone which is completely untrue...
Ok, i don't think the majority of people demand that things are done over the phone the way the ads suggest. People do it after the call ends. I don't see why iPhone users are getting so excited. I love my iPhone, but this is one feature I don't think i'll ever use. What we need instead is *real* multi-tasking. I'm considering Android...
Interesting. I don't believe I've had any probs accessing the web while talking on my storm 1. On a side note though...me and a friend (who had an iphone) were both using our respective phones to record our class lecture. During class you could clearly hear his phone vibrate from an incoming call. Guess who he came to for a recording when his phone shut off the recorder from the incoming call? Mine never skips a beat to incoming calls or app switches. GG apple :)
haha seriously who even talks on the phone anymore? any of those simple questions would have been texted. the iphone is the shit but At&t is shit.
oh yea one more thing, yea i got Verizon and a blackberry storm 2, through my wifi i can complete my conference calls and work on my phone at the same time if i so choose.
actually I have windows mobile phone -- and it can do that... nothing special about this ad.. I think its a stupid ad
I'm not sure what kind of phones you guys are using but it makes me wonder if I am the only "lucky" person on the planet who can surf the web, read emails, talk on the phone and have turn by turn voice navigation all going at the same time on my droid without any type of extra wifi connection. My droid on the Verizon network can do all those things simultaneously without any extra networks or wifi. Once again.... for all the AT&T commercials out there... Verizon allows you to surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time using their network. I have had an iphone for over 3 years and only dropped AT&T after their service just went through the floor here in the bay area for some reason. I was getting dropped calls almost every call !! I even bought a new iphone to see if it was just the phone, same result. NO idea why they keep advertising that AT&T is the only surf/talk network out there. Nothing is further than the truth. Anyway, I like the droid. So far to date the only thing I miss on the iphone is the finger swiping of pictures while in the gallery. On the droid you have to press an onscreen arrow. meh !
