Apple Sept. 9 Event Officially Confirmed: Expect An iPod Touch

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on August 31, 2009

aaplevent090909.jpgApple today finally ended the guessing around exactly when it will hold its annual fall iPod refresh event: The date is Sept. 9 and the location will be Yerba Buena Center For The Arts Theater in San Francisco. Not many clues in the invitation that I can tell. The tagline in the invite says “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it,” playing off of a Rolling Stones song.

One thing worth noting in the image is that the model isn’t holding an iPod nano, but an iPod touch. As I’ve argued recently, I expect that its on the iPod touch where much of Apple’s research and development efforts are going to be focused going forward. It’s pretty clear a new touch is going to be the star of the this show.

This is false. Get your facts straight. :/
I work for Apple, and recently also bought a new iPod Touch & had an online chat with a worker, who confirmed there isn't going to be a new Touch, as we have been told!
Don't start rumours.

Kelly's a BSer... if he/she really worked for Apple, he/she would not give a yes or no as to what it will be. in fact he/she wouldn't even reply on here. Apple has a strict secrecy policy.

Actually, I disagree that there aren't any clues in the invite. Every September for years now, Apple has said they would have, and then had, an iPod-focused event. And every year after that event, a bunch of moron analysts label the event a disappointment for not featuring a tablet or Mac updates or a flying pony or whatever. Oftentimes this reaction is enough to help move Apple's stock negatively following the event. I believe the event's tagline, "it's only rock and roll", is aimed directly at those analysts. As in: "It's ONLY rock and roll", only an iPod/music event. This is as plain an address to Apple's "expert" observers as I've seen the company make.

And if you walk into any store, all the Ipod touch cases are on sale, and there is hardly any stock of Ipods - and rumors are rampant that the new touch will have a camera, and, and, and,

New or old iPod Touch is still almost the same... for me as long as it connects to Internet that is fine.... Old one is good for me now...

Big deal.

Apple is just playing games again because they know the flock will get all wet and excited over the news of something "new" which is not really new just updated.

Why anyone would buy a player lacking key features like a recorder and radio says a lot about those iPod users.

I have been waiting for ages for this iPod to come out! The main reason I have waited is because of the rumored 64gb which is hardly a rumor now! The camera would be great also. Who needs an expensive iPhone. Just get a 3rd gen touch and a shitty nokia and some ducktape! lol

I tested it... Not much of a change except for the fact that it has a camera (3 Megapixel but I'm not really sure) that records videos and takes pictures...

A faster processor (ARM Cortex Processor)

A faster GPU (PowerGX SVR)

Built-In microphone (though Apple may drop it)

Also the 64GB version might be dropped Apple noted.... because the 64GB flash based drives are costly (they have to get the SSDs which are extemely costly)

The 8GB is going to be dropped.... Meanwhile the iPod touches will drop prices like always but the unlike the previous generations the iPod nano 4th generation and iPod touch 2nd Generation will still be supported so users can choose either to buy a iPod with or without a camera and (for touch) a faster processor and GPU

This is kind of like with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S they didn't drop the support on iPhone 3G because it is very popular and the 3G S just added significant features (not that huge features well kinda huge but still not enough)

That's what I'm looking for...the best $300 Touch I can get, waiting for 32GB and though I don't think I'll need the camera if I bought one without I know I'll wish that I had (for some reason).

I basically need a good PDA and want an iPod, and am jonesed about the wifi, so I figure this will cover all the bases. Early Christmas present for myself.

The Ipod Touch will be offered for $220 and we will give Zune a run for its Money. I am also giving one little bit extra: we will have an OLED screen!!! Enjoy

September 6, 2009 06:45 PM

you mean, the touch will "finally" have an oled screen... several mp3 players have already had this for awhile now. Until apple can improve their Sound Quality and provide a product worth their ridiculous price, other MUCH BETTER alternatives are available. People just hear the word ipod and jump... Zune HD will slaughter the touch... not to mention several other mp3 players that already have. Quit being fanboys and RESEARCH! Not only read reviews for ipods but for Zunes, Samsungs lineup, Sony's (best untouched sound quality), etc.

Any announcement short of "the full Beatles catalog available on iTunes" is moot. A skinny nano with a video camera? Do they think we're five? I enjoy Apple's stuff as much as the next person, but this is ridiculous!
