Consumer Reports Loves The iPhone, Twice

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on July 01

In its latest round of ratings on smart phones, Consumer Reports has given Apple’s iPhone its two top spots.

Two? Yup. The iPhone 3GS came in at number one, and the iPhone 3G came in at number two. On the 3GS, the display, battery life and other features is what carried the day over the Blackberry Storm and the Palm Pre, though CR says those models bested the iPhone on messaging. CR also produced an iPhone vs. Palm Pre video that’s worth watching.

Yep. Consumer Reports also rated the Suzuki Samuri: they shoved it over by hand several times so that they can take pictures of its roll-over tendencies. They lost the law suit on this one. And now, they just love a phone that gets so hot that the plastic casing melts and discolors. What kind of uninformed twit reads Consumer Reports now-a-days? Just search the Internet.

Yes, reviews from some kid working in his mom's basement are just as good as the thorough, objective , rated, publicaly available reviews of the Consumers Union.

BTW: Suzuki case was thrown out in a scorching judgement: "If Suzuki can get to trial on evidence this flimsy, no consumer group in the country will be safe from assault by hordes of handsomely paid lawyers deploying scorched-earth litigation tactics."

Or are you annoyed that the iPhone is so succesful? It's sucks when companies amke fantastic products that are powerful yet easy to use, doesn't it? iPhone users don't need to hire a nerd to get their email working, is that the problem for you?

@DanTe

Oviously, you stopped by CR to read the story, so you must be a twit and a tool. Also, the number of cases of iPhones overheated and actually discoloring is so small it's not even funny. But, because people on the Internet beleive everything they read, it gets blown out of proportion. Jeff Goldblums fake death for example, need I say more.

Yeah, Consumer Reports is out to get you, better go hide DanTe - everything you read on the Internet is true. ;)

Dan-ee:

Actually, CR WON the defense of the lawsuit brought against them by Suzuki concerning their review of the Samurai.

Nice try. You have great career as a tech journalist ahead of you.

Hmmm.... interesting how "multiple" people use the same "holier than thou" "pompous elder" denigrating writing style. Or is this just characteristic of imbeciles who buy Apple stuff? The original suit against Consumer Report by a Suzuki dealer was thrown out because the dealer was not targeted in the report, the car was. Read http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/news/suzuki-and-consumers-union-agree-on-dismissal-of-lawsuit-704/index.htm . But doing a search on the Apple forums, I realized that Mactards are a peculiar breed of imbeciles in denial. People posted on their boards about the iPhone or Macbook heating up. And their standard condescending response is to question whether the problem was caused by using it too much. So Apple products are not supposed to be used? Just pose with it?

Apple just issued an advisory on overheating iPhones: "do not use in sunlight". Use only in cool dark dank places - much like mushrooms and Apple users: kept in the dark and fed a load of sh/t.

DanTe,

Someday when you grow up, you'll work, and you 'll be able to afford the phone you like the most and when CR ask you if you are happy with it you'll be able to say how happy you are with your phone.

Amazing. It's the same kid writing under different handles pretending to be an employed adult. I said pretending because it seem to think that an iPhone is somehow expensive.

Chuckle, you guys are funny... I love seeing extreme tech bias being flung around.

To "JB": what's so "extreme" "bias"? I just point out the facts. And some dumb kid decides to put on airs. And airs is all it managed to post.

@Dante,
I've never heard anyone be so blatently jealous of a phone. Wow, Dude, go change your little girl panties. CR just posted their results of their research, I don't think they were attacking you... WE'RE the ones attacking you... because you're crying a little girly man that can't handle the truth. LOL!

Overheating - Some people have reported problems with overheating when they are charging their phones froma wall outlet and using it for certain functions (GPS, web, ...). The phone has been out for what, a little over two weeks, let Apple do a little research. If there is a problem you'll hear it publicly from Apple, not in some advisory to dealers. The Palm Pre has issues with the keyboard working loose and gapping from the rest of the phone, but I wouldn't condemn the whole phone for a few problems. Grow up and get a life!!!

Now don't get me wrong. I just purchased the Pre and will probably keep it.....probably. There is a chance it'll go back to the Sprint store because of all the BASIC functions it does NOT have that many other Smart phones have as well as MANY other non-Smart (dumb?) phones. Features that many would say you just take for granted. Did the "pre" guy even use the phone for any length of time? How about a little basic research re: it's capabilities or lack thereof? Tip for him: check out the newfangled thing called the "internet" and maybe something called "Google". Kinda easy way to get info about a whole lot of stuff. Back to the tip.....Google "Palm Pre Problems" and see what comes up.....then redo the video. He says "The Palm Pre and almost every other Smart Phone has those features" when referring to what the iPhone dude says about the iPhone re: voice control, video and video editing among other features. There's NO voice control for the pre!....NO voice dialing!......NO voice anything! Not to mention NO video capabilities! It does take decent pictures though. Re: the Pre-iPhome comparison video from CR. Thorough??...objective??....rated??...publicly available?? Well yes jkimball....correct on that last one. Guess is is, unfortunately, publicly available. I think I'll just ignore any more CR reviews if they continue to release such blatantly incorrect and misleading crap. Sorry...the video comparing the Pre to the iPhone is definitely NOT worth watching!!! In the pre guy's defense, I do agree with many of the features described but I'm just a consumer (the "C" in CR) and I just want my technology to work out of the box and not have to conjure up great gobs of "Faith" hoping basic apps and features will be forthcoming.

Most products take time to become 'perfect' at what they do. I'm sure the smart phones are no different. I don't want a smart phone, just a phone when I need it.

I just got an ipod touch and set up wi-fi in my home. It really is amazing how easy apple makes these to use. The wife and I are both impressed.

To be fair, CR has a better record than that one case would indicate. Apple is not perfect nor is Palm. Use what you like and like what you use.
