Apple has reported its earnings for its third fiscal quarter, and as expected it easily topped the consensus estimates. Per-share earnings were $1.35 versus the $1.16 expected by analysts. Sales were $8.34 billion versus $8.2 billion. Gross margin was 36.3%. Net income was $1.23 billion, versus $1.07 billion a year ago.
Apple sold 2.6 million Macintosh units, of which 1,754 or more than two-thirds, were MacBooks or MacBook Pros. Sales of desktop systems came in at 849,000. If my spreadsheets are correct this is just a whisker short — 8,000 units — of equaling the fourth fiscal quarter of 2008, when Apple reported its best quarterly Mac sales ever: 2,611,000 units. It is the highest level of Mac sales all year, and amounts to a 4% improvement over the year-ago quarter.
On the iPhone front, Apple sold 5.2 million units, which is also second only the fourth quarter of 2008 when Apple sold 6.9 million units. Its also a big improvement over the year-ago quarter, but that’s a bad comparison because in the third quarter of 2008, Apple sold only 717,000 iPhones right before the launch of the iPhone 3G on the last day of the quarter.
Finally, the iPod has finally seen its first year-on-year decline. Apple sold 10.2 million units versus 11.01 million units in the year-ago quarter, representing a 7% decline. I suggested that sales were weakening last year in this story in the magazine, though Apple managed for the first two quarters of the 2009 fiscal year to keep its iPod numbers growing slightly.
The conference call is about to start, and there’s still some curiosity around whether or not the voice of CEO Steve Jobs will be heard.
YES! Buy Macs. Remember folks, there is NO SUCH THING AS AN APPLE VIRUS. None! Do NOT waste time and money loading up those fake anti-virus softwares for Macs. Even the official Apple forum site has officially pulled any recommendations for these anti-virus money pits. Just log into your finance sites and rest assured that it is safe. And make sure you use the Apple Airport wireless connections. It's the best thing out there for me. The more Mac users out there the better it is for my retirement funding/hack :)
My wife just bought iPod Touch (8Gig) this month... It is so cumbersome to sync songs or movies (from MP3 and YouTube)... Who said it is user-friendly.... Man, I hate Apple. Well, I hate Microsoft too.
Apple is evil, no one realizes it yet... placated by smooth designs, but they are all about CLOSED SYSTEMS, this is the way of the past... REVOLT!!!
And yes, you know why it was cumbersome, because of iTunes, that POS bloatware wouldnt ever be allowed near my computer (PC baby)
No, check out sharepod or something like that... using that, I can say Apple makes good hardware but its overpriced (look a their profit margins lol) but its good none the less... go sharepod
Undenniably, the syc of Ipod is cumbersome. However, it aims to protect copyright
Sam, if your having problems syncing songs on an iPod, you've got bigger problems.
I'm so glad my in-laws followed my advice and added Apple to their portfolio years ago.
@Sam syncing your songs and videos to your iPod is as easy as 1-2-3 and A-B-C.
Yeah I agree with PaulL. What's cumbersome about plugging it into and clicking Sync?
Personally, I thought that one of the more interesting points in the call was when Cook referred to iPod, iPod touch and iPhone as "pocket" products. This is the first time that I have heard Apple use such terminology, and nothing is an accident with Apple.
To me, this suggests that there is some segmentation/re-classification of their various products planned that is probably timed to the tablet device rollout, something that I blogged about in:
