It's Official: Steve Jobs is Back at work at Apple

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on June 29

Bloomberg News moved an alert on its wires at 12:36 PM Eastern Time saying that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is back at work. The Associated Press followed up with an alert of its own at 12:48 PM. This now makes it official.

I don’t know exactly why anyone should be surprised, given how its both the end of June, and Apple has consistently, maddeningly, repeated over and over in response to practically any question about the CEO, that “Steve looks forward to returning to work in June.”

That statement, usually attributed to Apple spokesman Steve Dowling has been replaced by a new one: “We are very glad to have him back.”

Additionally, there was the little bit about Steve being quoted in the press release concerning sales of the iPhone 3GS.

Apple stock is up 32 cents or 0.22% as of 1:20 PM EDT.

The next step in the process is for Jobs to be seen at some kind of Apple event. I’d start looking for that in September. With the iPhone and MacBook upgrades now out of the way, there isn’t a lot of major product news to expect from Apple for the remainder of the summer, though I should hedge that by saying that Apple hasn’t — at least in recent months — been sticking to its well-worn product-introduction patterns.

For the last few years Apple has refreshed its iPod line every September since 2005, and it would seem that the iPod touch would be the next likely candidate for some attention. Now that the iPhone 3GS is sporting 32 gigabytes of storage capacity, it would make some sense for the iPod touch to go to 64 GB, and to perhaps get a camera and maybe even an internal microphone — for audio recording apps and for VOIP-over-WiFi apps like Skype, and to ship with iPhone OS 3.0 pre-installed. It would make sense for Steve to introduce just such a product in person at an Apple media extravaganza, would it not?

"It would make sense for Steve to introduce just such a product in person at an Apple media extravaganza, would it not?"

No, it wouldn't. Prior to his medical leave, Apple was clearly taking steps towards reducing Steve Jobs's presence at product launches and giving other executives (Shiller, Ive, Forstall, etc.) more attention. Even though Jobs may be back and working full time, I'd expect that trend to continue.

Apple has shown that it can pull off a successful product launch (and whip the media into a frenzy) without Jobs being directly involved. They clearly need Jobs as a visionary leader, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next time a product launch rolls around, Jobs will be sitting in the front row of the audience instead of being up on the stage.

Steve's back on the job, IPhones are overheating in France, merchandise is flying off of the shelves; seems like old times.
The coming quarter will feature the mother of all beats.

@Michael: LOL

Apple starts selling craps such as the new 13" MacBook Pro when Steve Jobs were sick. They're becoming more and more like Microsoft. I'm not sure if Apple could really survive without Jobs.

I think Steve will strut out and introduce a person or two at the next shindig. he needs to let us all welcome him back and let us see that there is color in his cheeks an some meat on his bones (even if they have to pad his shirt a tad )

but there is much wisdom in leading the company from behind the curtain of Oz

( the great teacher teaches in such a way that when he is done the people look at the progress and say " Look what we have done this time" there is no wisdom in leading from the front when the head of the snake is cut off the body has nowhere to go )

Steve Jobs is the Michael Jackson of the electronics entertainment of the world. Same hypersecrecy, similar in life-threatening illnesses, outstanding talent, phenomenal influence on the world. Welcome back Steve; good health to you.

I really think though that the next iPod update may not be the iPod Touch. For one, it would be incredibly ridiculous to include every feature that the Iphone already has to a new iPod touch. You might as well just go ahead and buy a REAL iPhone. And I'm thinking that the next update should really be about the iPod Classic. It's the one who hasnt had a real hardware change in the past few years except for the hard drive downgrade to 120 GB.

Kris, buying the iphone ability without the ugly two year indenture to at&t is attractive. It is far from incredibly ridiculous. I’m in the Navy stationed in Spain and I just bought an 8GB touch for $219.00 We don’t have the at&t network over here and regularly have to re-up our sim cards. If I sprung for a no-contract iphone (big $$), I’d have a larger appliance than the touch but would only be able to use it in limited fashion. My little Motorola phone works fine for (get this) talking to other people. I use the relatively inexpensive touch for everything else: email, internet, etc.. but with no monthly strings attached.
