Dow Jones Newswires is confirming reports yesterday that Apple plans to introduce a Netbook. The story says that Taiwanese display maker Wintek Corp. is providing 9.7 to 10 inch screens to huge PC contract manufacturer Quanta Computer, and that the device will be on the market in the second half of the year.
But assuming the reports are true, what exactly is this device? Given Apple’s increasing dominance of the most profitable parts of the computer business—the part built around PCs costing more than $1000—I find it hard to believe that the company will offer the same kind of lower-powered, margin-crushing $300 or even $500 netbooks that are now shaking up the Windows PC industry. Everything about Apple’s history would suggest that Steve Jobs will want to protect his profits, rather than dive into the muck of a nearly-profitless business just to maintain share. And while one can argue that Apple needs to offer cheaper devices in this economy given plummetting consumer spending, one might also argue that the worst time to get in a price war is when sales are so tough to come by. It’s one thing to slash prices when times are good; at least you get the big bump in revenue, and can spread your fixed costs across more units. In this environment, it may make more sense than ever for Apple to stick to its more discriminating clientele.
So what could this device be? One good guess is that it’s the world’s biggest iPod Touch, rather than the world’s smallest Mac. Such a device would not run the full MacOS, so wouldn’t need the extra processing horsepower, memory and disk capacity required to run that software. Indeed, I can see Apple’s marketers making a compelling case that you don’t need MacOS to do what you’d want to do with such a device. If you want to run Photoshop or play games with state-of-the-art graphics, buy a Mac. But a larger iPod Touch would be great for people who value screen size over portability. It’d be better for browsing the Net and watching your movies and such via iTunes, not to mention less demanding games and other graphically-oriented programs found on the App Store. And if the device had a real keyboard, it would also be far better for people who want to do more email and other forms of text input (especially if Apple would finally add “cut and paste” capability).
Would be the perfect place to house some of those low-power PowerPC processors the acquisition of PA-Semi brought them. It's not like they need to do any porting there.
I'm guessing an internet tablet with an iPhone like interface.
I'm guessing it's a large iPod Touch that transforms into a spaceship.
Just one point of correction.. The Iphone does run a version of the full scale Mac OS X Leopard right now...albeit some features are not active purposefully by Apple.
However, with the advent of the next rendition Snow Leopard.. an even more scalable and powerful version of the OS can be installed on both the iphone and a hyrid iphone/netbook equivalent.
Think 'IKindle'
Why else would they need multi-core ARM chips from PA Semi?
SSD, low-power multicore ARM, perhaps even Rosetta to bring full OSX apps to it, bundled with 3.5G and sold via the telcos.
No, no the device will allow you to pick ingredients from a menu, shake it up, and pour smoothies or mixed drinks from a spout on the side.
As long as an Apple is chosen as one of the ingredients. ;-)
If it is a giant ipod touch, it would need to be able to run firefox for those banking sites that don't work with safari. And the ability to run iworks or a similar office suite will be essential for those frequent travelers who'd like to travel light.
Think iNewspaper, iBook, iPortableDVDPlayer, iNetbook, iKitchenCookbook, iCalendar, ...
I'm thinking it's going to be a tablet-sized device that will work as a phone, netbook, and GPS device. Oh, and it'll have smell-a-vision.

To say something runs a full version of OSX, albeit a limited, scaled down version of it is complete BS by you intentionally or you've been brainwashed by Steve Jobs rhetoric.
No copy & paste? No switching between applications? A full OSX? Really? That's your correction?
Really?
Do I need a smaller Mac? My 13" Macbook is perfect for what I do now, which is mainly photos and internet. However, I would be tempted by a 9" model (screen and keyboard) for about $500 that can handle the same. At $500, there is still a Mac markup (for OS X) over a stripped Asus, Dell or Acer with Ubantu for $199.
Yeah, about 500 bucks for a baby Mac.
Will It Run MacOS?..if it integrates well with iTunes & MobileMe (incl. Mail) does it really matter ? Would be nice if iWorks would also run on it.

Hello,
I believe that there will be a new OS developped for this which will be in between what you see on the iPOD and the Mac.
Just remember the eMate 300 - I bet money on a 21st century version of that.
One thing that's for sure - the headline is absurd.
Apple is putting OS X in its phones, for Pete's sake. Why in the world would they build a larger device with a different operating system?
One can argue about whether it's a full OS because it doesn't have copy and paste, but that would be a pretty stupid discussion since no one knows what the device is supposed to do (or if there really IS a new device, for that matter).
You can bet your bottom dollar that it (whatever 'it' is) will run OS X, though.
The Apple netbook already exists - it's the Dell Mini 9. Potentially hundreds or thousands of people have configured the Ubuntu version to run Mac OSX with astounding results. And even with hard drive and memory upgrades, the hardware and software to do so still comes in well below $500. I can't imagine Apple actually producing and selling a machine that inexpensively.
That's why THIS Mac fanatic finally gave up waiting and did just that. I absolutely LOVE it, and highly doubt I'll give this machine up when and if Apple's netbook actually comes out.
The iPhone runs Mac OS X, albeit a stripped down version.
If it sells for less than $500, it will most likely run the stripped down version.
With a screen that big, its entirely possible that the screen itself could be the keyboard. That is the next logical step.
Chuck, I think you're being a little harsh.
It isn't so much that iPhone's OS X won't support multiple applications--it will. Otherwise, how would you play music while surfing the web? It's that Apple is not allowing third-party applications to run in the background. Yes, that's bad, but it's not due to any limitation of the operating system. It's due to Apple's not wanting third-party developers to make the iPhone look bad.
When Jobs first announced the iPhone, I was surprised when he said that "It runs OS X." That was the first time I'd heard Steve ever refer to it that way--it was always "Mac OS X." Of course, the reason is obvious--there's lots of stuff in Mac OS X that wouldn't work well on the iPhone (the menubar) or is "legacy" (Carbon).
So it's quite possible that the iPhone runs a "full version of OS X" or a "scaled down version of OS X" depending on your definition of "OS X." Clipboards are not something that is part of "OS X"--it is, instead, grafted onto Mac OS X.
Mac OS X is "OS X" with a Mac GUI (WIMP) and associated drivers on top.
iPhone OS X is "OS X" with an iPhone GUI (multi-touch gestures) on top.
Taking away the different GUIs, how much of the first OS X is included in the second OS X?
I don't think they have a choice. The days of fat profits are coming to an end. If the depression goes world-wide they will need to have a Mac Net-book running MacOs X. Better to sell million $500 Mac Net books that have a $1500 Mac-Books sit on a shelf.
With cloud computing and wireless access the game has changed. I would buy one, but not a $1500 MacBook
It should run Mac OS X (not the limited OS X). We need thousands for our University.
I have seen reports that broken iPhones can use bluetooth keyboards. This would go well with a larger iPhone/Touch device
I would consider buying one if it would do notes and other things.
It would also be nice to configure it with voice recognition or inkwell
All Apple devices run on OS X.
The iPhone OS and the Mac OS both are based on OS X.
It is reasonable to predict that a net book would run a version that is unique, but more similar to the iPhone than the more resource intensive Mac OS.
A significant factor in the choice of OS will be the work being done on Snow Leopard.
Snow Leopard will be smaller, more clever using CPU/GPU cycles, improved energy use, improved modular structure.
I would expect the following characteristics: PDA style form factor with no physical keyboard, a custom version of OS X that uses iPhone applications, a revamp of Newton pen computing technologies (including inkwell), use of specialized chips based on ARM and using Nokia system on a chip designs, and using the same advanced battery technology used on the 17" Macbook. Expect two versions (like the iPhone/iPod Touch) one with phone capabilities, one with wifi only.

i think apple is realizing that entire new communities are springing up around the iphone/ipod apps... i mean, just looking at the music apps alone, you could have a pretty nice portable studio just based around apps in the app store. this just gives them a bigger market for that software beyond at&t customers. not to say you couldn't do the same for less (or even free) on a PC... i think they're just playing to a recent strength.
Think PADD from Star Trek Next Generation. It will be the ultimate web surfer, remote, emailer, portable movie player, coach airline kid pacifier device. If it cost $499 or even $599, americans would snap it up. We shall see.....
The full Mac OS X inside is required for full-blown presentations from NATIVE Apple Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.
Apple, make it and here is a big order for our University!

A Large screen iPod Touch to be considered their "Netbook" is probably the most unattractive 'rumored' news I've heard from Apple since crazy iTunes price randomization. The World needs Affordable Mac who love the Mac OS, but join 75% of people who just can't buy it because of it's retarded price tag. Yes, in my opinion, A Full Mac OS X or even Snow Leopard is required. No, a large screen iPod Touch wouldn't quite do it for Apple fans; I prefer an Macbook Mini. How would they do this? I haven't the slightest idea, all I know is an SSD under 200GB just isn't going to work.
It would be nice if Apple could make a netbookish thing that had a touch screen, and no keyboard. But, I have noticed that there are no ports such as USB, FireWire, Microphone or a port for an external monitor on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Those ports would be nice on the new netbook.
