JaJah To Turn iPod Touch Into A Phone Next Week

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on January 30, 2009

Hitting Twitterville now: Jajah, the Internet telephony concern will announce next week a service that will turn any iPod touch into fully functioning mobile phone using only a Wi-Fi connection. I remember trying Jajah sometime back for making phone-to-phone calls that are connected via the Internet. I was wondering when someone would figure out a way to turn the iPod touch into a phone. I didn’t expect it to come from Jajah however. More on this next week. But what I don’t get is exactly how they will do it. Last I checked there was no microphone on the iPod touch. Nor was there a Bluetooth connection which might be suitable for a headset. Perhaps an attachment plus an application?

Analyst Michael Gartenberg just added via Twitter: “New iPods can make use of those new headphones with integrated mics. Expect that is how it will work.”

Here’s a little more detail from Jajah itself, (appropriately via its Twitter feed) that Apple’s earphones with the remote and microphone which can be purchased alone or which come bundled with the iPhone will work. Here’s a video demo from Robert Scoble.

Thanks to colleague Steve Baker who sent initial word to Twitter.

You must have been living under a rock not to know that the itouch 2 has the ability to record via an external mic. Go back to herding goats moron.

Umm, am I missing something? TruPhone works perfectly fine on the Ipod Touch using the integrated headphones/mic and wifi. It's been around awhile now.
