No Jobs At Macworld After All

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on December 16

Well now we see why Paul Kent was more than a little evasive on the topic yesterday. Apple just announced that Steve Jobs will not be delivering a keynote address at the Macworld Expo on Jan. 6. Phil Schiller will do the job. And? It will be Apple’s final year of participation at the show. Trade shows, Apple says in a statement have become a “very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers.” Of course the street will speculate away about Jobs, and his health, and other matters relating to this, and frankly so will everyone who follows Apple. But I guess an important annual Apple touchstone is now at an end.

I think that Apple needs to cut costs just like other businesses in this economy. Withdrawing from MacWorld will save it millions in the difficult years to come. Perhaps the savings will go toward opening more stores.

Also, MacWorld magazine, which has the same corporate ownership, can be troublesome for Apple. For example, it encouraged hacking Macs, jailbreaking iPhones and even Psystar. Maybe Apple is fed up.
