Hewlett-Packard said today it is launching a version of its MediaSmart home server that is suitable for use in homes with both Macs and Windows computers. The MediaSmart Server ex485 and ex487 can be used to back up files from both Macs and Windows machines, can stream media stored on the server over a home network, and can also function as a central iTunes server and work with several machines on the network running iTunes. For Macs running Leopard, it also supports Time Machine. It runs Microsoft’s Windows Home Server software and sports Intel Celeron chips. The ex485 comes with 750 gigabytes for $599 and the ex487 comes with 1.5 terabytes for $749. Both are expandable to support up to 9 terabytes.
Too little, too late.
For file storage only, or for a Mac specific environment, Apple's Time Capsule is 1TB for $499. So this device is a bit expensive unless you need the expandability.
