Perhaps one of the best things to happen to music in the last few years, other than the iPod itself, is the Sonos digital music system. I’ve tried it at home and really like it. The system uses wireless networking gear to create in independent wireless network around the house over which you can stream music, and play it through your home stereo system or a set of free-standing speakers. I’ve tried it at home and really liked it.
As good as it is, it has suffered from two fundamental problems: 1) the system doesn’t work with Fairplay-protected songs purchased on iTunes (though it does work with practically every other format you can imagine), and 2) the controller was fine when the system had only limited functionality, but software upgrades have given the Sonos system a lot of new features like the ability to stream music from Rhapsody and Sirius Satellite Radio, Pandora and Last.fm, and so on.
The answer today is an iPhone application that gives you full control of the Sonos system from your iPhone or iPod touch. I got a demonstration with Sonos CEO John MacFarlane, which you can see in the Wireless Way segment embedded below.
