Is The Mac Mini Dead?

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on October 21

macminirip.jpgGizmodo has a report saying the Mac Mini could be killed as soon as today’s earnings conference call. Apparently retailers in Europe are saying shipments have ceased and they’ve been told not to expect any more. This would I think be a mistake. The Mac Mini is still the lowest price Mac on the market starting at $599. Even so it doesn’t sell as well as the iMac, but it hasn’t been updated in awhile. Who knows? We’ve heard reports of the death of the Mac Mini so many times, I won’t believe it until it’s really truly confirmed that the plug has been pulled. Meanwhile it’s still available on the Apple store online.

Why is it a mistake to pull a product which nobody is buying, when all evidence points to people preferring to buy MacBooks or iMacs instead?
The world told Apple it wanted a cheap Mac. Apple gave them a cheap Mac. The world bought more expensive Macs instead. Apple's still growing Mac sales by 30-40% every year, with the mini a tiny contributor to that growth.

Cheap Macs not wanted, apparently.

It could be the dead of the actual Mac Mini and a news version could come...(an upgrade...)

I want one, and so do a lot of people I have spoken to. I'm just not gonna buy a new computer with the same internals (and bloated price) as my laptop i got two years ago.

Does a small segment need an inexpensive desktop Mac without a screen? Yes. Do they want to spend their hard-earned money on a system whose graphics haven't been updated in over *3* years!? Nope. Update the graphics and I'll buy one tomorrow.

As I understand it, the Mac Mini sales are fine, albeit not as high as the iMac.

I for one hope that they keep it. It is a great first Mac for PC switchers who already own a display, keyboard and mouse.

I am seriously considering buying on as a media center instead of a Mac TV simply due to the fact that Front Row can be configured to recognize avi files and not just MP4 files.

The Mac Mini is a great idea, an strategic option well put, for those guys who are still afraid to switch for real, and hence prefer to buy the Mini, keeping their peripherals. But to keep it alive -and even to sell more- Apple does need to upgrade it... Long life to the Mini...(much better than the Netbooks, right?)

From a house of two mini Macs run by two people, the death of the mini would be unfortunate for us.

Although the iMac is very nice we prefer to keep the computer and display separate. We replace the Mac more frequently than the display, keeping the display about 10 years and the Mac about 5.

On the other hand I could back off to one Mac, replacing my Mini and PowerBook with just a small MacBook which I could connect to my large display at home.
Not the best for Apple's business volume, but it does give me ideas on downsizing.

As a macbook owner, i think i would prefer a mac mini as a desktop mac if i were to buy one. i'd like an update first though.... im for it staying!
