Just when I was hoping that iPhone firmware update 2.1 was going to improve the performance of the loaner iPhone I’ve been using from Apple, here comes another headache courtesy of Apple. Since launching iTunes 8.0 a couple of days ago, my Vista PC crashes whenever I synch my iPod. It only takes a few seconds after connecting the device and boom—a full-blown, coronary-inducing Blue Screen of Death.

Fortunately, Vista recovers after I reboot. Unfortunately, the fix Apple suggests on its website to resolve the issue isn’t working for me. I’ve run through the process twice, at the cost of well over an hour of my time, and the iPod still crashes my system. I’m not alone. Check out the final entry in this very long thread on Apple’s support site.
I don’t know what’s going on in Cupertino, but Apple needs to get off this bad streak in a hurry if it wants to maintain that warm-and-fuzzy brand reputation it enjoys. I, like most people, tend to give Apple the benefit of the doubt when the inevitable problem crops up. But this disappointment is starting to feel familiar. Using an iPhone for me has been addictive in many ways, but also maddening; a call with my Dad dropped not once but four times as I drove into the Apple event in San Francisco last week—a route on which I have never noticed major connectivity problems in the past. And tonight, I wanted to go to bed hours ago as I’m suffering from hellish allergies today. Yet here I sit, messing with my PC just so I can get it working like it was a few days ago.
Did you mean this comment"
"Has anybody ever thought that it actually could be Vista that's the problem? "
dude - lay down the small amount of cash and get yourself an iMac and stop your crying
As soon as Apple wants to say it product is compatible, it should be.
iTunes is getting a bad rep, I don't like the fact it's getting bigger and more cumbersome everyday, even though I don't have an iPod or an iPhone.
Do you really have to have all Mac products to enjoy them working flawlessly? Don't get me wrong, I would in a pinch!
iTunes 8.0 is working great in my MacBook. Fast, reliable and with tons of new features.
BTW, how can anyone buy a computer running Vista? I don't get it. There must be some masochism involved.
User applications shouldn't be able to crash an OS like that. iTunes is probably triggering a Vista bug. Without detailed analysis, it's hard to tell where the problem really is.
PC: "Mac, I thought we were friends, why do you keep zapping meee...uuuurghhhh...
Mac: "PC, you're just such a sensitive petal. You need to toughen up a bit..."
Solution? Get a Mac.
Get a Mac and be happy.
PCs are required to run some programs that a MAC simply cannot run unless you use crossover or something to that effect. Macs simply cannot run many of the high end and newer games that are available for PC, an example would be L4D. As a gamer, and someone who uses computers both Mac and PC extensively, to say "Go get a Mac" is highly off putting. I think the better question would be, why is Apple not making sure that its supposedly compatible software IS actually compatible?
