Fire at Apple HQ

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on August 13

The Associated Press is reporting that firefighters have put out a fire that burned for nearly three hours at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The first reports of smoke came about 10 p.m. Pacific last night and contained about 12:30 a.m. More details here as they become available.

More from The San Jose Mercury News, which identifies the building involved as Valley Green Six, which Appleinsider identifies as a major hub of hardware research and development work. (See update below.) Firefighters say the fire wasn’t that big, but that there was a lot of smoke damage. Here’s some video from the local CBS affiliate, and another report from the local ABC affiliate. A view of the location from Google Maps is below.

Update:I just got a call from Kristin Huguet, an Apple Spokeswoman. She says the building in questions is not devoted to R&D. She declined to say which Apple group is based there. Ars Technica, citing employees who work in nearby buildings say some Apple IT staff work there.
