Weekend Reading: Bird-Watcher

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on May 16, 2008

Apropos of nothing other than the fact that I occasionally mention my love for Jazz in this space, and have found that many readers share it as well, I wanted to recommend this profile of the New York DJ Phil Schaap in the current issue of The New Yorker. Also not to be missed, is the list of 100 essential jazz records, all of which would make great additions to any iTunes playlist. When I read such phrases as “jazz accounts for only 3% of music sales in the U.S.” it bothers me, and so every once in awhile I feel compelled to say something in its defense, and to encourage people unfamiliar with the genre to give it a chance. There have been many occasions where hearing certain jazz records has changed my life and my outlook permanently, and it is encouraging to learn that there are still people who care about it as deeply as Schaap clearly does. Have a good weekend, one and all.
