Fox Business Segment on Apple Vs. Microsoft

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on May 05, 2008

I was on Fox Business’s “Money For Breakfast” this morning talking with host Alexis Glick, Wired’s Leander Kahney, and ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley. The subject was the rivalry between Apple and Microsoft, but we also talked about the symbiotic relationship between them. It’s a topic that’s hard to cover in so short a TV segment. You could almost design an entire Business School course around it, but we did our best.

Great segment and it gave me a new "Outlook" on Fox.

I am not sure about the situation should MicroSoft stop selling Office for the Mac. I have pretty much stopped using Office and am no using iWork. Sure it is not as full featured as Office, but I wonder if Apple doesn't have a more powerful iWork sitting in reserve.

Apple doesn't need the enterprise market to succeed. It really needs to focus on small to medium size businesses, the consumer market, education and it's tradtional multimedia markets.

I can tell you working at large corporation that corporate software has gone stale compared to the innovations happening on the consumer front.

In other words, don't chase small profit margins and focus on the value added sales! That's where Apple's success will show.

A friend who works for Apple Retail says if she had a dime for every consumer who walks into the store saying they've had it with Vista and to please show them a Mac, she'd be rich. People who've never used a Mac are blown away by what it can do. And with the One to One program where for $99/year you can go into the store once a week and get a one on one lesson on pretty much whatever you want to be able to do on your Mac, people are learning how to take advantage of what their Mac can do. Apple is smart - it seems their goal is that their customers are happy and know how to use their computer.
