iPhones Around The World: Part II

IPhone Use Around The World
iphoneworldstats.jpgAs a follow-up to last night’s post on pictures of iPhones around the world, commenter Mark G. in Warsaw, Poland, points out this table of use of iPhone browsers by country. I did a screen grab of the top 14, mainly because I was surprised for some reason to see that the iPhone has reached — of all places — Libya. The stats show the iPhone browser as a percentage of all Web browsers in use in the given country. Apparently its so popular in Equatorial Guinea that it constituted more than 2% of all Web browsers in use that country during the sample period. Take look at the stats yourself, right here.

All this, I think serves as evidence that Apple could successfully take the iPhone international in an unlocked form, and bypass the difficulties of negotiating exclusive carrier relationships, and simply charge more for the phone. Clearly it will still sell. Clearly the gray market in iPhones is rather healthy.

having done quite a bit of work in developing countries, i can attest firsthand that these countries ARE jumping into a connected world via mobile phones.

these countries do not have the infrastructure in place that allows families to buy computers, a phone line and power to connect to the internet. most families have to survive on as little as $10US a week.

mobile devices are a cheap way to get onto the net. all you need is a phone and SIM card. this is why iPhones are so popular in developing nations.

Good idea for customers, but not for Apple. I bet they are making more money from service revenues they get from carriers in exchange for exclusity.

Just a thought, could these stats also include users of iPod Touch?iPhone isn't available in CZ - iTouch is. This comment was written (slowly) using an iPod Touch, from Prague.

Another thought...

Where is NetApplications getting their surfing data from?

Hitwise buys ISP data but only covers major countries.

Comscore has a 2 million panel worldwide that they use to project website visits.

No one has the database of all internet users' visits (and what browser they use) except maybe God. Next to God is probably Google.

So NetApplication's data is a limited set of data. Is this data skewed? Probably. By how much? don't know.

Just my 2 cents worth.
