Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel was in our offices here in New York on Monday. I would have been in on the meeting, but was busy listening to Apple’s earnings conference call and so couldn’t make it. My colleague Steve Baker was there and published a Q and A story on their conversation. Among the many things he said is that he and his wife both own iPhones, and while he uses a Lenovo Thinkpad at work, he uses a MacBook Pro at home.
I was thinking about Apple’s Mac sales numbers today and what they’ve meant to Intel. During Intel’s earnings conference call last week, Intel said it sold a record number of microprocessor units in its third quarter (Transcript here.) While Intel doesn’t disclose unit sales numbers (or at least didn’t give numbers during the call) we also know that Apple sold a record number of Macs 2.164 million in its fiscal fourth quarter. One record, apparently helped begat another.
