Last month, I did a story on iSuppli’s teardown analysis of the latest iPod nano. Among the things I reported, citing iSuppli’s analysis, was that Cypress Semiconductor had been supplanted by Synaptics as the supplier of the clickwheel technology. Here’s a link to iSuppli’s statement.
ISuppli has since torn down more nanos, and found that some contain clickwheel chips from Cypress, and some from Synaptics, meaning both companies are still happily suppling Apple. ISuppli pointed out in an email on the subject that its not uncommon for Apple to eliminate one supplier in favor of another. So when they saw that Synaptics was back as a supplier in their sample nano, they concluded that Cypress was out. That turned out not to be the case.
