iPhone France Release In Trouble?

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on October 08, 2007

Buzz is building that the French debut of the iPhone is hitting some serious turbulence. Word is that Apple CEO Steve Jobs was irritated that Orange CEO Didier Lombard jumped the gun and confirmed that the iPhone’s next European port-of-call would be Paris. More here on the topic from EUROSOC.

One big hurdle is money, or more precisely, revenue sharing. But it turns out there’s a lot that may complicate a French iPhone launch: French law requires that mobile operators sell phones in such a way that they can be used interchangeably with other carriers. That’s certainly going to be a bit of a hurdle, given Apple’s tendency to go exclusively with one provider in each country.

haha, its the same law in denmark. you cant sell a mobile phone to a specific mobile operator unless you provide the option of an unlocked phone. Great part is that danish laws requires that you can only have a contract phone for max. 6 months! you gotta love the danish laws here! :-)

I'm currently living in the UK and have found myself in abit of a situation, i recently got myself a Nokia 8600 luna whereby i'm stuck with the contract for 18 months - 17 to go, but i also just found out 2 days ago that Orange is being forced to sell an unlocked version in france as in Germany. Only difference being:

-Germany = 999 euro's
-France = 679 euro's

I'm currently now very interested in purchasing myself one, but i'm still not quite clear on the aspect of me being able to use it in the UK WITH A VODAFONE sim card.

Now i know that i can now get a iPhone in the UK but it total's to more then the phone being with O2:

The iPhone has to be purchased as in the US, but for £269, then on top of that you have i.e. a £35 PER MONTH contract for 18 months.
Meaning your paying 630 + 269 = 899 being close to £ 900 for the final lot (this isnt even including the possibility of the call limit being over done.

Taking this UK information and looking at the French iPhone:

679.00 EUR
=
484.797 GBP

So you could purchase 2 unlocked iPhones for the price of 1. (lol, sounds like a super-market sales pitch).

Only question now stands for you guys to tell me if you know whether i will be able to use it with a UK vodafone sim card - Please reply soon, Pierre

Apple should change it's tactics of stealing people's money.
iphone is a overpriced and Apple and service providers are minting money in an unethical way.

Yeah, screw the French?

Thanks to their government, there is at least a semblance of consumer protection, unlike in the US where the carriers can lock us in for TWO YEARS, which is now the standard.

I would take France's way of letting you use YOUR phone freely versus the US way any day.

Referring to the Newton’s comments, I presume this is Newton’s Law of nationalism. Actually we should all screw Apple; they sell the phone for it's worth. If no one buys it they will be forced to drop the price. Don't give into the marketing hype.
