Radioshift: Rogue Amoeba Does It Again

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on September 24, 2007

I received an email from Paul Kafasis of Rogue Amoeba, the independent software house that has given the world such cool apps as Audio Hijack Pro and Airfoil has yet another interesting audio app out today: Radioshift: Its essentially a consumer friendly radio time-shifting and recording thats meant to replicate Audio Hijack’s radio-stream recording feature, but making it easier by including a searchable schedule database. I was lucky enough to get an early download link and am putting it through its paces right now. Very interesting. You can search for stations you like, or by genre, or by geography. And it also connect to the RadioShark so you can record live over-the-air radio as well. The scheduling information comes from RadioTime.

Paul tells me that while Radio Hijack has always allowed the recording of radio streams, but admits its a little clunky. It does take a little trial and error. You have to specify which app, then feed it a URL (which can get tricky when the provider makes the actual URL of its stream hard to find). Then sometimes the URL changes, or you set the time to the wrong day, and miss the show you want.

The biggest change is the built-in Radio Guide, which has some 50,000 listings. You can find Internet streams for thousands of AM and FM stations but it also features specific programs, including those found on NPR and the BBC. I’m playing around with it now and at this writing recording a little over-the-air classical. Will let you know how it all works out.

This is awesome! I've been doing the same thing with a bunch of hacked together scripts and Audio Hijack Pro, but I am glad to see them integrate this into a simple program.
