The roar of the MGM lion will soon be heard from iPods, Macs and PCs the world over. Apple and MGM announced today that they had come to an agreement to bring 500 MGM films to the iTunes Store, effective today. That includes “Rocky” and “Mad Max” with more to follow.
One thing I hope will happen in time with iTunes movies as with music, is that the studios break out their back catalogs and make them available. A few real classics are showing up and “Roman Holiday,” “Island in the Sky” and “War of the Worlds” appear to be the oldest live-action flicks available (all released in 1953) while Disney’s “Dumbo,” from 1941 appears to be the oldest of them all. (Correct me if I’m missing something…) How about a partnership with Turner Classic Movies once Time Warner signs on?
Turner Classics would be a great online resource.
I hope it happens.
