Mozy Comes To Mac Today!

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on April 25

Little birds flying in from the direction of Salt Lake City are telling me that Mozy for the Mac will launch today as a public beta. Mozy is that online backup service you may have heard about for the PC. For less than five bucks a month, you can get unlimited backup space, and an application that handles the backups automatically so you don’t have to think about it.

I’ve used Mozy on the Windows machine at the office, and actually came to like it a great deal. It does however have one downside: That first backup takes a long time. But it will handle any kind of data, including those two things you always mean to back up but don’t: the iPhoto library and the iTunes library.

What kind of backups can it do? Incremental backups of different versions of a file. It’ll encrypt the files using a Mozy-generated key or one you generate yourself. Plus the servers hold on to both the most recent version and 30 days worth of previously modified file versions, so if you need to go back and get that Keynote presentation from two weeks ago before you changed it so dramatically yesterday, you can. And how about this: You can even request a DVD of the file for next-day delivery.

So far Mozy has 180,000 customers has started landing some big corporate customers: This 25-person startup has just landed General Electric as a customer. Cool, no?
