Looks Like An Airport Refresh Is Upon Us

Macrumors appears to have sniffed out some news on the Apple Wireless front. It’s pointing to a description of a Macworld developers session which mentions something called Airport Extreme X2 and X4. This would suggest that there are two new Airport products on deck for tomorrow’s keynote, and I have to say its about time. Apple was way ahead of the rest of the world when it launched Airport Extreme using 802.11g technology well before the final G standard was completed and ratified.

But come on — that was 2003!. And the last time we saw a new product of any kind in the Airport family was the Airport Express — in 2004. Since then, every other networking vendor in all creation has launched products based on the various iterations of 802.11n. If this turns out to be true, then I’d have to say Apple’ rather late on its wireless roadmap.

Know what else would be nice? A few more Ethernet ports on the router. I like to have more than one. Right now I have an 8-port Netgear switch connected to the Airport Extreme router.
