iPod Shuffle? Meet Manhattan Traffic

Posted by: Arik Hesseldahl on January 11

I don’t know how or why the tradition of posting pictures of severely damaged personal electronics began. Here’s an example, and another, and still another.

So with this odd tradition in mind, I thought I’d post these pictures of a someone’s idea of a very bad day. Two days ago I was crossing Second Avenue at 84th St. in Manhattan and in the middle of the crosswalk found – and for some reason picked up – this badly squashed iPod shuffle.

As you can see it didn’t fare well. My guess is that some young person walking to school dropped it and had to explain that it was “missing” to an annoyed set of parents who had just bought it as a holiday gift.

Click on the thumbnails for larger versions. Plus there’s a shot of the back here. (Thanks to my colleague Davide Sleight for the pictures.)

Apple should have stayed out of the phone business. Once again they have created a great product, only to lose the market to someone else. How could they have been so stupid as to sign an exclusive deal with Cingular's GSM network. OK, GSM is fine in Europe. But, the USA, China and most of Asia are CDMA not GSM. Cingular is a rotten network! I don't know why they havn't been sued for lying about their dropped call record. Check out Dec. 2006 Consumer Reports: Cingular came in a distant 4th in quality. ATT is a loser company also, having basically gone bankrupt and been name salvaged by Quest. Att's own Cellular network bombed and is being technically shut down. Just review the many complaints about abandoned customers. Apple better strike a CDMA deal with Verizon and Fast. Otherwise, the monster CDMA Vendors will go to Microsoft for their own solution. Looks like a major screw up by Stephen Jobs. Too bad, it was a nice product. Next time stay with what you know, or find some very good consultants to guide you along the way. By the way, those telecom consultants don't live in California.
