YOUR STAND ON MICROSOFT: SURVEY RESULTS

According to the first online reader survey we've posted during the trial, the Justice Dept. is batting .750. Going three for four is usually an excellent day at the plate -- except that the one question Justice strikes out on is the BIG one: Who will win the case? Less than 30% of the more than 600 readers who responded think the government will prevail in the end. That's even though most readers think Microsoft is too powerful, that it's a monopolist, and that Justice is doing the right thing in bringing Microsoft to trial.

Of course, this isn't a scientifically valid survey, but it is interesting. And we thank everyone who took the time to respond. Here are the question-by-question results:

1. Is Microsoft too powerful?

61.8% Yes
36.0% No
  2.2% Don't know
2. Would you characterize Microsoft as:
39.8% A national treasure that should be left alone
60.2% A monopolist that needs to be reined in
3. Is the Justice Dept.:
58.6% Protecting a vital industry and ensuring innovation
41.4% Interfering with a successful company
4. Who do you think will win the case?
28.9% The government
65.1% Microsoft
  6.0% Don't know
