Give Your Business a Data-Protection Reboot


The FBI says attacks and malicious Trojans targeting small and medium businesses and others have led to approximately $100 million in attempted losses in the past several months. Cybercriminals are getting craftier each year, and all-too often business owners erroneously think they’re protected from emerging threats by their antivirus, firewalls, and router. Unfortunately they are wrong; Cybercriminals easily sneak past these basic protection pieces. Give your security strategy a reboot by taking the following steps:

1. Reevaluate your level of protection. Most small businesses count on antivirus, firewalls, and maybe some networking devices to protect them from the unknown. Don’t get stuck with this false sense of security. Today’s cybercriminals use complex methods with critters that steal business data and bypass antiquated protection mechanisms. Pay special attention to Web security because 85% of attacks come through the Web.

2. Protect your road warriors. Only 15% of SMBs have all employees working from a single location. Whether you’re on the road or you have a distributed workforce, protecting your business data is critical. Protect your employees, machines, and confidential data from HQ to Hong Kong. If your IT person tells you they need a security server for each office or need to fly somewhere to repair a machine, you should be prepared to spend major money.

3. Put security in the cloud. Buying, maintaining, and upgrading hardware and software is expensive. Consider protecting your business using "security in the cloud." Web and e-mail traffic across your entire business can be protected through services delivered via the Internet that are constantly updated and easy to deploy. Consider Web and e-mail security services as a critical layer of security protection. Stop those nasty critters—worms, viruses, and data-stealing spyware—from ever getting into your network.
