China Calls Obama Meeting with Dalai Lama 'Useless'

China's government said a meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama would "undermine" relations

(Bloomberg) — China's government said a meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama would "undermine" relations.

Such a meeting would be "unreasonable" and "useless," Zhu Weiqun, vice minister of the Communist Party's United Front Work Department, told reporters in Beijing today.

Envoys for the exiled Tibetan leader met in the past week with Chinese officials for the first time in 15 months. Such envoys are not empowered to discuss greater autonomy for Tibet, Zhu said.
