Volkswagen is showing its new sub-compact this week. I show a picture of the interior here because VW does the sharpest interiors in the land, especially for econo-cars. This is sweet.
The Polo is a little smaller than the Golf/Rabbit. While the Polo has been ubiquitous in Europe and other markets, we haven’t seen it in the U.S. But the VW execs in their newly minted Fairfax, Va. U.S. headquarters are trying to make the business case for the Polo stateside.
The sixth gen Polo’s exterior styling is unremarkable. It’s just very conservatively sharp, which is what we expect from the VW studio.
The Polo was specifically designed to attain the recently established, stricter and more comprehensive, 5-star EuroNCAP rating. The higher structural rigidity of the Polo’s bodyshell contributes to these results. In the footwell area alone, intrusion – related to the car body’s deformation strength in a frontal crash – was lowered by 50 percent! In the case of a side impact, the intrusion value was reduced by 20 percent.
In Europe, the public will see a new TDI and TSI engines, as well as the 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
The new 1.2 TSI is a turbo-charged four-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine producing 77 kW / 105 PS, yet it consumes just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (129 g/km CO2); this is 19 percent less than on the equivalent model of the previous generation!
