Among the many ticking time bombs that will drop on the next president, add health care. Despite the fact that there won’t be much money around for expensive new initiatives, the financial crisis could make the demand for health care reform even stronger. In a new survey from Deloitte LLP, two out of three American consumers say health care will be an important issue for the new president to address in his first term. The reason? Only 6% believe their family is prepared to handle future health care costs.
Health care remains one of the major issues influencing voters as they go to the polls, even though it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention from candidates since the financial meltdown. According to the Deloitte survey:
67% believe reducing costs of health care is an important issues when selecting a candidate for president
56% believe increasing access to health care is an important issue when selecting a candidate for president
57% believe improving quality of health care is an important issue when selecting a candidate for president
37% of respondents graded the U.S. health care system a D or F
The findings are based on a survey of a nationally representative sample of 4,010 U.S. adults conducted between October 2 and 10, 2008. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.6 percent.
