Apple just announced that its App Store topped 10 million application downloads in three days since launch. Today, the store that sells games, ringtones and organizers for the iPhone and iPod Touch offers some 800 applications, a quarter of them free. These numbers are stunning. No other mobile applications store has ever come close to this kind of sales volume.
What would be interesting to find out, of course, is whether most of the downloads are of free or paid content. Unfortunately, Apple provides no insight into that: The iTunes store features separate top-10 rankings for paid and free applications. My bet is that most users are going for the free stuff, though.
