Both fellow bloggers David Stillman and Lynne Lancaster and Harvard Business Online’s Tammy Erickson have pointed out that many of Gen Y’s “quirks” (my word, not theirs) actually stem from the behavior of their parents. That it was parents who insisted that kids get trophies just for showing up.
OK, they all have a point. So maybe it really is their--Gen Y's--parents' fault. And who are those parents? Boomers. But identifying the source of a problem isn't the same as coming up with a solution. So what is the solution? Do Gen Y's need a different managerial approach? Or is treating people with fairness, professionalism, and having certain expectations for workplace behavior an outmoded idea?
