A New Problem-Solving Technique

At times, a small-business owner will notice a recurring pattern of underwhelming results. This pattern could mean that you’ve got a hidden attachment to the status quo. Asking, "Why does this keep happening?" leads only to symptoms and not to the root causes of the underlying problem. Instead, try asking, "What is at stake if I keep things the way they are?" Take that answer, and ask again, "Okay, now what’s at stake?"

Repeat the question until you can go no further and you are likely to discover the source of the enduring problem. Solutions will then become evident, helping you make the changes necessary to break the recurring pattern and improve the overall effectiveness of your small business.
