Software for global teams
Steve Hamm
IBM has plenty of labor cost challenges in the US and Northern Europe that are pinchinng its IT services profits, but its techies are in the forefront of using software to make services more efficient. The company's latest gambit is a software package called Jazz, jointly developed by IBM Research and the Rational tools division, for managing software development projects for teams that are globally distributed. I believe that eventually all IT services organizations will be globalized, so one of the main differentiators will be how well they can manage their processes across geographies, time zones, and cultures. IBM used its experiences with the Eclipse open source development community, which it has sponsored, to come up with the right structure and proceedures for Jazz.
