Digital Text--How It's Turning My Media World Inside Out.

Check out this wonderful (thanks to John Battell's blog) YouTube video by Michael Wesch, an assistant professor of cultural anthropology professor at Kansas State University who really "gets" how digital text differs so deeply from printed text. The video shows a deep sophistication about how the web really works in connecting ideas and people. It shows how technology is truly transforming the conversations we are having.

One of the core strengths of design and design thinking is empathy--understanding people. It is the cornerstone of the innovation movement that is spreading throughout business culture. Design and anthropology have always had deep connections. So I'm not surprised that it's an anthropology prof who gets the change in communication.

I especially like the Q&A in the Battelle blog where Wesch talks about using Facebook as a classroom--bringing teaching and education to the arenas where students hang out. Now, start imagining this on a major scale and you can see a design mind at work.

Ummm, actually you just did it again Bruce. That innovation hype thing some of us have called you on.

When you casually state:

"It is the cornerstone of the innovation movement that is spreading throughout business culture. "

You need to understand that it reads as yet more Bruce blather. That statement is simply, utterly, totally false and you need to stop saying that sort of thing. Your credibility takes a hit everytime you write this stuff.

Thanks for the comment but I'm at a loss. What is totally false about "it is the cornerstone of the innovation movement that is spreading throughout business culture?"

It's a huge struggle for most companies to change their cultures from efficiency-based to innovation-based. It's just starting for most of them. Many don't even get it. Most do and a few are speeding ahead. It'll take a generation--just like the quality movement.

That work for you or am I missing something else?

Bruce,

There is no innovation movement. Nor is it sweeping across any particular industry except of course the Internet space. There is you, speaking. There is Rita Sue Seigal recruiting and speaking. There are various bloggers and consultants talking the talk. There is of course the biz press trying to sell paper.

In industry there is the C-level that more or less understands put fear reprisals from market analysts. There are the lower level staffers who totally get it and wish they had the power to shake things up. Between these two extremes is a middle managment corp that is scared, confused, and generally unwilling do to ANYTHING that will screw up their retirement plans.

Just speaking truth to hype my man.
