Business opportunity: Devils wing of the Hall of Fame

Stephen Baker

Here's an early weekend rant on baseball. Apologies to non-fans.

A high school friend and I have a new idea. Build a rival Hall of Fame that celebrates baseball for the bawdy sinful sport it is. Call it the Devils' wing, and set it in Atlantic City, Vegas or Miami's South Beach. Alcohol will be served in the devils hall, gambling encouraged. Videos will show famous beanballs. Kids will learn in interactive sessions how to throw a spitter, how to cork a bat.

This new hall will be fun. Fans will love it, just the way they prefer the Sopranos to Ozzie and Harriet. Players will be clamoring to get in. Some icons will transfer out of sleepy Cooperstown. Maybe even the Babe will be moved posthumously to the sinners wing. He was no saint, and he loved a good party.

good thinking. but how would this be different than the regular hall of fame? i suppose you'd have to switch cal ripkin for pete rose, but that's about it.

Kind of similar in concept to the All-Drug Olympics skit on SNL a few years ago.

It could have a roller coaster called the Juicerama to simulate the meteoric climb of a steroid juiced player and the rather steep drop when they're found out to be cheaters? And a room called Did He or Didn't He? to speculate about players that never tested positive but everyone's pretty sure was juiced up (McGwire? Bonds?).

Funny idea and I'd probably go and visit, especially if it was a quick cab ride off the strip!

Schaden, the difference between this and the existing hall would be immense. That Hall is a monument to virtue, both real and imagined. All the sleeze that gets swept aside in the existing hall would be front and center in the devil's hall, right next to the bar.

so the devil's hall will be more virtuous because it's honest about the sleaze. wait.. confused. and kindof sounds a little like blog v. msm. one just tries to be virtuous, the other says it's more virtuous because they're honest about their sins. okay i'm just bored at work, trying to stir the pot. i'd still buy a ticket to the devil's hall, if i could forge a children's ticket or something.
