Does Apple's Steve Jobs Know That Cingular Isn't Global?

Bruce Nussbaum

Dear Steve,

So Verizon doesn't support cell or email service in Europe--but did you know that Cingular doesn't support email service in Europe for the TREO? That astounding fact hit me today after I switched from Verizon to Cingular. I thought that its GSM standard would allow me to get both voice and email while I was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos next week.

Silly me. When I called to activate the international service (and why do you have to make a special call to do that anyway?), I was told that Cingular will support Blackberry email in Europe--but not TREO, even though Cingular sells the TREO in its stores and says nothing about what it will or will not support in them.

In this global age, it is just stunning to me that both Verizon and Cingular cannot deliver email to Europe through the TREO even though both sell it. What are these guys thinking?

So, Steve, can you change all this with the iPhone? I sure hope so.

Bruce

Calling to activate the international service doesn't necessarily guarantee that you will be able to get your calls through. We did but when we got to Australia a week later, we could not use our Cingular phone. In Australia, Cingular said our international service was not activated. Slow boat to China, er, Australia?

Don't count on Apple to change the way wour Treo works. Don't count on the iPhone to work like your Treo, either.

I have a Palm Treo 650 (Palm OS) from Cingular. I had no problems using the Palm email client to send and receive email from my email accounts in Europe in July of 2006.

I don't know where the confusion lies, (either in your description of the problem), or what you were told by Cingular, but based on my experience, there's no truth to the idea that a Treo from Cingular can't send and receive email in Europe.
