BusinessWeek makes staff cuts

Stephen Baker

I got word that something was up in an e-mail. Then I called a friend, who it turned out had just gotten fired. This is 21st century life in our branch of mass media. Twelve staffers are gone. Many of them I've known and worked with and admired since arriving at BW nearly 20 years ago. It's grim, and I don't have new analysis on the throes of mass media, at least nothing that Jeff Jarvis and Tim Porter haven't already written.

I just didn't want you to think that we were pretending the cuts hadn't happened, or that we didn't care.

BusinessWeek, mainstream media

Sad to see Business Week sliding to oblivion. I read it since the 1970s. But that is coming to an end, now that there is no European edition and I have to put up with the truly horrible Zinio. Creator of bloated files that you cannot index with desk-top search software.

As a result of transferring to the e-edition for the rest of my subscription, I have a dozen unread issues. It wasn't like that with paper. I will not renew.

I am now reduced to Fortune. It could be worse, Forbes.

Steve,

I am sorry to hear about the staff cuts. The world is clearly making huge change. Living in Michigan...I am VERY aware of change.

As a matter of fact.. after another read of "Who Moved My Cheese", my wife and I are making changes as well. We have sold our mortgage company, of 15 years, and moving to Scottsdale.

I was shocked at how much of my self worth was wrapped up in my company (I gained 30 pounds!!...oh my).

But in November, I will wake up in the desert and be working on new and exciting opportunities.

My best wishes to all those involved. It may seem like the end of the world..but go read "Who Moved My Cheese" and find your cheese in a new and exciting place.

All my best....

I have been an enthusiastic European subscriber since, maybe, 10 years or so. Unforunately, the quality drop since the European edition was scrapped has been all too obvious. I am just now considering whether to renew - probably not since I share many of the views by Mr. Kenward above.

I have to say, though, that "Blogspotting" is by far the best magazine- or newspaper related blog around.

Good luck to all of you.

I think the Business Week podcasts are some of the best out there. I know they have ads on them but maybe BW needs to find a way to monetize them better, or convert podcast listeners into subscribers. I've listened to dozens, and not one cross-sell offer.
