I am constantly fascinated by what Sci Fi is doing online, from their behind the scene podcasts to now, a series of Webisodes made for the Web for Battlestar Galatica.

Long tail, sure. Marketing, sure. But I also think that this is all about pushing the notion of the show as brand, no matter where it is. When I was growing up, you chose what channel you were going to watch for the night and you stuck with it. The channel was the brand. And when I was 16 it was NBC Thursday nights, of course. Nowadays, most kids can't name which shows are on which channels, let alone the major networks. So, it makes sense to turn the show into the brand, into the franchise, and to build onto it.

I remember thinking that the French were strange, because they organized their books not just by authors, but by publishers. Publishers, in effect, were channels, which people still paid attention to.

One other thing I've noticed as content gets chopped into pieces: Ask people who still buy CDs which songs they like, and instead of saying the title, they'll say, "Track Five."

Damn! That's insightful, Heather. Thank you. And exactly right. Stephen King is the brand, not his publisher (who *is* his publisher?). So, just an example from another medium.
