On Telephone Telepathy and Chat Robots

Olga Kharif

I just read an interesting article on CNet about telephone telepathy. Apparently, a researcher has done a small study showing that people often know which member of their social group is calling or e-mailing them. The study's subjects could guess who it was before they picked up the phone or logged into their e-mail account with 40% accuracy. The researcher concludes that minds of people within social networks are connected.

These findings were presented as part of the British Association for the Advancement of Science conference that's continuing this week. Other topics discussed are just as cool: One team of European researchers has found a new way of treating cancer -- by cooking cancer cells. Another team developed a chat robot that can carry up to 1,000 concurrent conversations. Personally, I was the most intrigued by the telepathy study, though: Who can't recall thinking of someone and soon getting a call or an e-mail from that person?
