Meebo Widget Untethers Instant Messaging

Heather Green

Meebo, a startup that lets you instant message across different types of IM software, is releasing a widget that lets you embed instant messaging into Web sites, including social networking sites, blogs and even e-tailers.

Because Meebo is a browser-based instant messaging service, it has the freedom to untether Instant messaging and allow it to be easily integrated into different places around the Web.

The widget lets you chat privately with visitors while it gives your visitor a heads up that you're around--if you want it to.

What is the security status of such a service? does it open any potential vulnerabilities? this would be my initial concern.

Browser based cyber attacks are emerging as a rapidly growing threat.
