Credit Suisse Cuts Novell to Neutral

From Standard & Poor's Equity Research

Credit Suisse downgraded Novell (NOVL) to neutral from outperform, noting the company's quarterly results for the second quarter.

Novell posted 3 cents vs. 2 cents second quarter earnings per share (EPS.)

Analyst Jason Maynard says its total revenue and EPS are in line with his estimates, but license sales missed his estimates while Celerant business (which the company divested) picked up slack. He notes the window of opportunity for the company to realize its restructuring opportunity has passed. Despite the best efforts of industry partners like IBM, it seems that the turnaround task is much too daunting given structural problems with the company. He thinks the company has not materially changed focus or strategy to enable them to execute on Open Source market opportunity.
