AT&T and "Blogging Delivered"

Heather Green

My boyfriend told me about this ad he spotted at a bus stop a couple of nights ago and I got him to go back and get some photos.

Is this too funny to be true? It's an ad marketing AT&T as the onramp for blogging. Uh...what? If you're a blogger, you, er, already have Net access. But if you're someone who doesn't know anything about blogging, are you supposed to think that AT&T will be your gateway to the blogosphere?

What the heck is this trying to market?

Here are some other photos he sent to give a sense of the "flavor" of the neighbordhood, he says.

I think AT&T/SBC is lost on this one.

I Googled the phrase - turns out a lot of people are noticing the signs and having similar reactions.

At the center of AT&T's thrust is their Project DU. It is not, however, an avenue for bloggers-to-be. It is a network of existing blogs / bloggers. As you peruse Project DU, you begin to realize that the folks at AT&T have, at best, a cursory knowledge of the subject.

Those looking to blog are subjected to "Blog 101," a condescendingly simple coverage of the subject, and then directed to Blogger, Moveable Type and a few other of the top blogging and blog-related sites.

Overall it's just lame. They've tried to make it edgy and exciting, but again the efforts reveal that they don't understand the medium. It's like your 55-yr old balding uncle trying to show you he's "hip" by using words like "hip" and wearing clothes from the 70's.

Hey Heather, I can't see the photos, at least on this connection

It is just one in a series of ads for their "___ Delivered" campaign.

I think it launched in January. At least, that is when I first saw it.

it just struck me that maybe at+t knew that bloggers would be taking pictures of these billboards and posting them all over the blogosphere. for free!! if they put up a big one that says "heather green delivered!" i will photograph it and email it to you.

Jackson, Brian. Thanks for the background. Definitely explains the context. And I agree, pretty lame.
