Harvard B-School Grads Flock to PE, VC, Hedges

Justin Hibbard

"Almost 75% of HBS students want to do private equity or venture capital. Only about 10% get to do it," says Harvard Business School class of 2006 student Abhishek Agrawal in this New York Sun article. Stats: 9% of 2004 and 2005 HBS grads took jobs at PE/LBO firms and 2% at VC firms. Last year, 10% of grads went into the "investment management industry," which includes hedge funds. I believe these stats were reversed about seven years ago, when most b-school grads wanted to be VCs. Note to self: job popularity among new MBAs can be a leading indicator of excess and imminent decline.

I would be interested in finding out how those 10% were chosen. Prior work experience? Prior Course work? Good old fashioned networking and good luck?
