Research in Motion Soars on Settlement


Shares of Research In Motion (RIMM) moved sharply higher Monday after the copmpany said it will to pay NTP $612.5 million to settle all patent claims against Research in Motion; NTP grants the Blackberry maker a license enabling Research in Motion to continue with its BlackBerry-related business.

CarrAmerica Realty (CRE) agrees to be acquired by an affiliate of The Blackstone Group in a deal valued at about $5.6 billion, in which CarrAmerica Realty holders get $44.75 per share in cash.

BellSouth (BLS) agrees to be acquired by AT&T (T) in a stock deal valued at about $67 billion, or 1.325 AT&T shares per BellSouth share held. AT&T's board okays a 400 million share buyback by the end of 2008.

General Motors (GM) is to reduce its equity stake in Suzuki Motor Corp. from 20.4% to 3.0% by selling 92.36 million shares. The strategic alliance between GM and Suzuki will continue.

Goldcorp (GG) posts 30 cents vs. 8 cents fourth quarter earnings per share (EPS.) It is to acquire certain Placer Dome assets from Barrick Gold and the Eleonore gold project in Quebec.

iVillage (IVIL) agrees to be acquired by NBC Universal in a $600 million deal, at $8.50 cash per iVillage share. NBC Universal is 80% owned by General Electric (GE) and 20% owned by Vivendi Universal (V).

Anheuser-Busch (BUD) and Heineken Russia are in a licensing deal that will allow Heineken to brew, sell, and distribute Anheuser-Bush's flagship brand under the Bud trademark in Russia.

Lexar Media (LEXR) reschedules its fourth quarter release in order to facilitate completion of its accounting analysis of inventory and other reserves. It now sees $237 million to $240 million fourth quarter revenue and 25 cents to 28 cents loss per share.

Longview Fibre (LFB) the Wall Street Journal reports that two investment vehicles, Obsidian Finance Group and Campbell Group, offered $26 a share for all Longview Fibre outstanding stock.

Open Solutions (OPEN) sees $62 million to $64 million first quarter revenue on breakeven GAAP earnings per share (EPS.) It also sees $370 milion to $380 million 2006 revenue and 65 cents to 69 cents GAAP EPS.
