Blog finds fault with our (ie. Heather's) read on podcasts

Stephen Baker

Sync2Play disputes Heather's down-to-earth prognosis on podcasts as moneymakers.

She's correct that there will be many podcasts with few listeners. At the same time there are already many podcasts with a critical mass of highly targeted audiences. This second group is where the ad revenue gets interesting. This second group is worth more than a typical mass market because the audience is targeted. $1 billion in 3-5 years is probably on the low side of the equation.

I agree that podcasts have a nicely targeted audience. I fit into a number of those targets myself. But one of my favorite things about podcasts is the absense of advertising. So the challenge is not just to find a micro-audience, but to entice it to accepts ads.

I know the advertising industry's mantra: It just has to be relevant. Well, that's true. But my objection to audio and video ads is that they command my time. This is especially true with podcasts, since iPods have only a primitive fast-forward button. I'll take lots of "relevant" ads on the computer screen, but don't necessarily want them entering my head through ear buds.

I notice Heather has been a bit... quiet on the blog today. A gang of us was out last night at the venerable Algonquin Hotel, celebrating my book leave. Compared to that madcap Manhattan escapade, blogging's positively blase.

COPIE DE MA DERNIERE LETTRE A BUSH

Laval, 2006-01-25

Mr. George W. Bush

President of USA

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Washington, DC 20500

U.S.A.

OBJECT : The set up for false emergency state

Dear Mister President,

You have recently obtained (in fact, this week) from the Senate that the Patriot act is re-approved for a second time. Now you have in your hands the proper tool to intimidate your political opponent as if they are a danger for the national security. You will use it to falsely accuse, isolate and maybe kill honest citizen who are in your way regarding your political agenda.

This is probable that you will secretly encourage an act of terrorism (if not a cascade of many) to put the union into an emergency state of distress and horror. Giving you the total latitude to act without being finger pointed by the observers of the world.

You are sailing well and the wind is blowing your way. But not exactly??

I will stand up in your way. And believe me I am one of the million of peace citizen that will stand in your way to impeach you to commit more crimes against humanity. As of today, you have more or less killed as much citizen as Hitler did during the second world war with your wars and their collateral effects.

You have created more misery than Mussolini did by your absence of concrete measures concerning the environment and it?? tremendous hurricane effects.

This is over Mr Bush. Your reign, your time as a ruler of this world in peril has passed. Now all the citizen will form a shield against your ideas, your philosophy of fear creation in order to obtain total control and total obedience.

You have placed Stephen Harper into Canada but you forgot to put Canada into Stephen Harper.

That?? the problem.

Never we, Canadians, will give you the moral right to accomplish your plan of destruction and fear. Never will we be beside you and your crew of extreme right wingers.

The loss of trust towards American Government following your manoeuvres to create a false sense of emergency is just the beginning. We will systematically oppose to your decisions and maintain a form attitude toward you.

You can kill me if you want me, get me if you want me but you can?? remove the solemn commitment for peace, order and justice that I represent.

Go ahead, I?? there standing up in front of you on the tip of your nose. Let see if Peter Pan is still good against Captain Hook.

My name is Peter (Pierre) and I will show you who?? the strongest when comes the time to preserve peace in our world who struggle to survive. Go ahead George and??put poison in my soup.

I am there, alone, unharmed.

Profoundly calm, still.

I?? just a man??standing up.

Trust me, I am there.

As a point of disclosure, my disagreement with Heather's read on thing has much to do with my own experiences in getting sponsors for The Chris Pirillo Show. We're well into six figures in advertising revenue on our own and that's only one podcast out of thousands.

While everyone can't expect to do what we're doing, it doesn't take many podcasts performing at our level or better to pull the entire category into the $1 Billion advertising level. If you could get NPR and Weblogs, Inc to disclose what they make from podcasting, the numbers already start looking interesting.
