Has vlogging, vidblogging etc found a name--Video Podcasting?

Heather Green

At first when I clicked on this Reuters story about video podcasting, I though, oh, wow, podcasters are already abandonning audio in favor of video following the Apple video iPod announcement.

Although I think some will do this, what this story actually means is that some video bloggers seem to be adopting the name video podcasting for what they do. So, does that mean that the confusion about what to call the act of combining video and blogging ( video blogging, vidblogging, vidcasting, vlogging) is over. Will we call it video podcasting? I don't know, to me that seems pretty limiting, but it has been a medium in search of a name.

I see video blogging as a type or genre of video podcast. The types of video podcasts will be very diverse. In my mind blogging is just one of them. However, I do see value in keeping a term like vlogging in play so that this genre can be described and branded uniquely from other video podcast genres.

I posed that same question yesterday:

I really do hope not. After the birth of TV, did they think: “Hmm! Let’s call it Visual Radio.”

Let’s give it a name that differentiates itself from podcasting. After all they are two different forms of media.

Heather,

I saw two typos in this post. I too end up making typos in my blog. I have also seen a lot of typos and grammatic errors in Jason Calacanis' blog. Do you see a copy desk emerging for blogmedia in the futur? I think that's needed if blogs have to be taken seriously and when they become a business.

Yeah, Apple's announcement last week did usher in a new category on iTunes: Video Podcasts (and there is still a huge question out there as to how to get listed in this category!). The same 16 listings have been there ever since, and there doesn't appear to be a way to select that (at least in Feedburner).

At any rate, some people have used "vodcasts" or how about just "vods" as a general category, and the videoblog/vlog is a sub-category that is for very personal storytelling? Then there needs to be a category for actual high budget network TV shows that are downloadable (actually, maybe that should be Vods for video on demand...) Ah who knows. But it's like this baby isn't even teething yet.

S Karat,

There might be copydesks in the future, heck there might be copydesks right now at corporate blogs, but for the most part, I doubt that will emerge.
