Did Apple jilt its customers?
Jeff Jarvis writes angrily that Apple boosted Nano sales for a few weeks by withholding the unveiling of the video player. For regretful Nano buyers, looks like you can get about $200 for a 2 giga nano on eBay. The responses from stirred up Apple aficionados are fun reading. B2Day links to Steve Jobs' historic dismissals of the videoplayer concept.

Jeff rants that his son is pissed but his sons blog doesn't rant. Apple didn't screw anyone.

True that his son's blog doesn't rant. But you're assuming that he would rant on the blog if he were angry. Is that always the case? Maybe he was walking around the house, iPod Nano dangling from his ears, muttering about how betrayed he felt. But when he sat down to blog, he settled for a more balanced tone. We just don't know. One thing I'll say: Picking a fight with Apple online is like stomping on a hornet's nest.

Ok, we're talking 4GB versus 30 or 60GB. They are simply different markets. The iPod is huge compared to the Nano and the Nano is no replacement for the iPod. If someone really wanted to carry a bunch of tunes they would have bought an iPod instead of a Nano and then would be pissed that their recently bought iPod is out of date.
Quit trying to create contraversy when there is none needed. Is this journalism or do you just line to wine?!

I'll tell you, BLW, I have a broken 20 gig iPod (with a shattered screen) that's functioning as a quirky 20 gig iPod shuffle, and I'm just wishing I had a 4 gig machine that worked on the move. I'd sacrifice 16 gigs for functionality, and yes, I consider them the same market. For what it's worth, I have no interest at this point in the video iPod. But if I could watch the baseball playoffs (with Tivo function) on it, I'm there.

Except that they *are* different markets. To say that they aren't is just silly -- it's like saying a Honda Civic and an Acura coupe aren't for different markets. Look, anyone with half an eye on the iPod market knows that (a) Apple releases new iPods regularly; (b) the full-size iPods were overdue for an update; and (c) people have been predicting a video-capable iPod for months. Jeff's son wanted a nano so he bought a nano. It's just as good of a player as it was the day he bought it.
P.S. The "stirred up Apple aficionados" comment was unprofessional. Jeff tends to go overboard when he rants, and this is one of those. It's just plain silly to say that a company "screwed its community" by releasing several desirable products a few weeks apart -- Jeff's son even said, "Let’s admit it – we all saw it coming." Yet if people call Jeff on such an overblown post, you write them off as "stirred up Apple aficionados"? *Your* bias is showing.
