Study: 35% of top blogs forsake money
A study by a British blogger on Adsonblogs finds that 35% of the top blogs have no Adsense, no donation buttons, no way to make money at all. Of course, some of them use blogs as promotional tools. And others simply aren't in business at all.
I'm curious about blog revenues. I'd like to hear from any bloggers who are making money (or frustrated trying). My key questions: What works? What doesn't?

There is a more secure income in plastic bottles in the mall, or sitting with a cup in front of the market. Or you could sit with your blogs url on a paper on the off ramp, and ask for hits to your site.

We run CityHippy.net - a green lifestyle blog.
Money...hmmm...this is a tricky one. Here are our thoughts:
Adsense did not work for us...the ads always came us as generic 'blog' ads. Google could not solve the problem despite repeated email conversations.
Donations...am thinking of using the Amazon honor system etc
Books...we are going to roll out a City Hippy library in one big post with all the books we would like to read or have read and will encourage reviews and suggestions for additions via the comments. All books will be Amazon affilliate links to US & UK.
Ads - we use blogads.com but have only just started reaching critical mass to carry ads - then again our rates are very low to encourage early uptake. From what we can tell our advertisers find us a very cost-effective way or reaching a very specific audience.
Merchandise: Cafepress when we relaunch soon with new logo and site design.
Other revenue: We think about this a lot. We do not want to alienate the readership. Too many ads make sites look crap. Too few revenue streams means we can only do so much. Happy medium. Speak to your audience...find out what they would and would pay for, what they would want to buy via the site and so on. Surveymonkey make this simple enough. Will be doing survey before much of the above.

Blogs should not be used to advertise in. When a person visits a blog, they are looking for useful information. Of course, you can provide links to your site and/or ask visitors if they want to sign-up to your free newsletter.

If people visit blogs to look for useful information, then there is all the more reason for advertisers looking for targeted audiences to flock there. Who knows what blogs will look like five years from now? For sure, the ones that will attract mass following will turn into an attractive playground for advertisers. This game has no rules... and that's what makes it so exciting!!
