BW Web Smart Project

Just wanted to reiterate that we're looking for suggestions of companies that are using blogs, Wikis, podcasts, video blogs, or RSS in interesting ways for a special report called the Web Smart 50.

This is a list that we do every two years that hightlights the most innovative use of Web technologies by corporations. For instance, Eli Lilly made the last list for InnoCentive.com, a Web site where companies submit questions to thorny problems and scientists submit solutions.

So, if you know of anyone using blogs, Wikis, podcasting, or video blogging to be more productive or efficient, would love to hear about these suggestions. We don't want the standard company exec or employee blog.

I'd like to nominate SitePoint.com as a candidate.

SitePoint is a publisher of computer books & training manuals, which are primarily sold online through its Website.

By utilizing free blogs on popular web technologies (http://sitepoint.com/blogs) and RSS feeds (http://sitepoint.com/syndication/), we maintain a huge active audience of Web Developers who come back to us over and over again to learn. This in turn, gives us nearly-free promotional outlet for new publications.

I think you may want to take a look at one of the companies that we finance, Shoe Stor (www.shoe-stor.com). While not a tech company, the founder insisted on incorporating a tell all blog into the company's website. The goal is to get next to the customer and build a dialog with them to ensure that future products that the company launches are what the market actually wants.

The other goal is to show that the company is not some faceless operation, but actually evolved out of the thoughts and ideas of a person who still has hands on control of the business.

Heather,

I started a blog to help promote my small business marketing ideas. Along the way it has been named the best small business marketing blog by the readers of Marketing Sherpa and recently picked as a Forbes favorite for small business.

I now publish a blog for HP's small business unit and the All Business Network.

I have transformed the blog to be what I call a blog network that includes 9 other bloggers writing about specific marketing topics.

The blog has grown to become a significant source of business for my firm and my brand, including leading me to signing a significant book publishing deal.

I know, way too much information but there's a lot out there about blogs and not enough about what results people are actually realizing.

We're a Vancouver design agency that specializes in branding and creative communication design. Like almost all other design firms, we feature a selected portfolio and brief profile on our website . To the trained eye, it gives a decent idea of our capabilities, but really doesn't say much beyond that. A prospective client or vendor has to meet us all in person to get the full experience. So we created a blog to provide more insight into what inspires us, makes us laugh, dream and desire. In aggregate form, it's a deeper peek into who we are, not just what we do.

Heather, is this open to sole proprietors who are not incorporated?

Blogging is one of several unusual online promotion tools that I use, some of which--like an international campaign around business ethics--have had some very intersting results. Will tell you more if this if it's of itnerest.

Hi Heather. I'd like to nominate my Painless Self Promotion blog, in which I 'road test' various types of publicity tools and then blog about the experience. For instance, I invited the Blog Squad, two blog experts, to coach me on how to improve my blog -- and then blogged about their advice and whether it helped or not. Now I'm doing same with a lead generation service called PRLeads. I'll be reviewing marketing conferences, PR databases, and more this fall .. all in service to my own clients -- small business owners who come to me for packaging, branding and promotion consulting.

The World Bank has a reputation for cutting-edge thinking about development issues; we??e trying to burnish that reputation, not only promoting the Bank?? own publications and projects, but also highlighting excellent research elsewhere. There are jokes too.

I'd like to offer the blog from Cincom Systems for your consideration. The innovative thing we are trying to do is what I call a "blogzine." You can get the general idea of our strategy by reading the About Simplicity page (http://www.cincom.typepad.com/simplicity/about.html). We have enlisted 21 staff members at Cincom, plus external "thought leaders" who offer insights to our readers in the 5 editorial categories.

The format on the home page of the blogzine is a listing of the most recent articles in each of 5 categories ... so it serves as a Magazine Table of Contents. By shifting to the view of articles by author, you would see a more traditional blog presentation with chronological postings.

I also publish a personal blog on marketing-related topics at http://contextrulesmarketing.blogspot.com/.

In both of these blogs, we do NOT promote Cincom products ... we are more interested in offering our customers a resource of ideas to help make them more successful.

I'd like to nominate GreenCine, specifically our award-winning film blog, The GreenCine Daily. (http://daily.greencine.com)

We've reached whole new audiences this way, increased awareness of our "brand" both nationally and internationally, without overtly pushing product too much.

We are also doing a lot with video-on-demand (http://watch.greencine.com) - both independent and international films. And hope to get into podcasting next year.

The commentary is provided by an insider who accompanies the UT Longhorns to and from games, on and off the field, and records observations giving visitors an up close and personal look inside the #2 nationally-ranked UT Longhorns.

The blog, according to Head Coach Mack Brown, is designed for recruits and their parents/families, fans, and families of those already a part of the Longhorns program. The video blog contains thoughts from the coach and team, as well as provides recruits with in-depth information about the Longhorns program and the high demand on the UT players, especially in dealing with the media. The blog also contains video clips and sneak previews of the programs Internet-based video magazine (Vmag). The UT Vmag is a weekly video magazine that fans can subscribe to for exclusive footage, commentary and information about the Longhorns football program. The video magazine is viewed over the Internet and delivered to the desktops of subscribers. It runs in full screen audio and video and the footage is not found on TV or elsewhere.

One of the co-owners of my workplace, Twist Image is a voracioius blogger who uses this tool not only to both enhance the company's current relationships with clients, suppliers and friends but to also to develop touchpoints with new contacts throughout the world.

Mitch's blog is fun to read, informative and always provides me with numerous links to check out (in my downtime of course!!!). He reviews many of top business and marketing-themed books as well as products, events and websites.

Many of his posts relate to the theme of generosity.... about getting what you want by helping others get what they want and about making business personal.
